Obedience Tricks Video

Obedience Tricks, Heel Work, Focus Work and Positions Video

I found that this video was getting hundreds of hits from a random thread on this German Dog Training Forum with lots of enthusiastic replies in German that I can't read unfortunately. Its just Dad expanding on the usual obedience routine with the lovely Kai, pushing the dog mentally to get more overall control (and a bit of showing off).

The bit where he's making the dog look at the ball and then at him looks a bit strange but the idea is to get the dog focussing its attention from the handler to something else which later comes into play when you introduce the helper in protection work for things like the back transport.

The dog is not an easy dog to train. He's a very handler aggressive, stubborn and unwilling worker with little ball drive. When people see him in obedience they think he must be some sort of monkey dog that will do everything but its been a lot of hard work especially growing up he was a bugger! Now he's lovely to be around, extremely controlled and works like a machine.

Hope you like it.

Ash.

I don't know what does pd stand for? The high stepping heel work is good for catching peoples attention but he's not teaching it to his new dog (Gilly) because some judges don't like it (apparently).

The judges that don't like it probably can't teach it how did your dad teach it or did it come from the head carriage allot of obedience handlers have the dogs head straight up to help keep the feet up. sorry by pd work I meant the man work!more use to working trials another good move to teach is to reverse backwards around the handler you get a cracking left turn with it through muscle memory. I would teach the pup both styles then he could use it to his advantage depending on the judge

Oh right 'protection dog' (makes sense now). He taught the prancing with food in the hand from the puppy and making the dog press its nose into the hand for the food. It wasn't a judge who told us its going to be banned, it was another trainer. We actually spoke to an SV judge recently about it who said its not the head up prancing that judges don't like, its when dogs do it with their hind quarters too low to the floor (Kai's hind quarters as you can see are absolutely perfect).

Dad had trained the prancing with another smaller dog we had called Kimbo, and because of her size she did have her hind quarters quite low so he switched to the 'normal' heel work position for her.

Basically its common sense that if you're trying to teach a dog a technique that is physically difficult you wouldn't go and do a trial doing it! We'd figured that out long before we we spoke to this judge who confirmed that the person who told us it would be banned had got the wrong end of the stick.

The dog does do this prancing in protection work too. I didn't know how this forum viewed protection as there isn't any mention of it so I thought it best not to post any of our protection videos if there isn't any interest.

If there is I'll put some up! Kai is even better in protection than he is in obedience, but thats because he was intensively obedience trained BEFORE we started protection, which too many people forget to do.

Ash.
