I would teach the pup both styles then he could use it to his advantage depending on the judge

Oh right 'protection dog' (makes sense now). He taught the prancing with food in the hand from the puppy and making the dog press its nose into the hand for the food. It wasn't a judge who told us its going to be banned, it was another trainer. We actually spoke to an SV judge recently about it who said its not the head up prancing that judges don't like, its when dogs do it with their hind quarters too low to the floor (Kai's hind quarters as you can see are absolutely perfect).
Dad had trained the prancing with another smaller dog we had called Kimbo, and because of her size she did have her hind quarters quite low so he switched to the 'normal' heel work position for her.
Basically its common sense that if you're trying to teach a dog a technique that is physically difficult you wouldn't go and do a trial doing it! We'd figured that out long before we we spoke to this judge who confirmed that the person who told us it would be banned had got the wrong end of the stick.
The dog does do this prancing in protection work too. I didn't know how this forum viewed protection as there isn't any mention of it so I thought it best not to post any of our protection videos if there isn't any interest.
If there is I'll put some up! Kai is even better in protection than he is in obedience, but thats because he was intensively obedience trained BEFORE we started protection, which too many people forget to do.
