Why is my dog aggressive towards people ?

This article introduces the preventative and training measures that can be taken to stop your dog or puppy developing aggressive tendencies towards humans. Owners of dogs that have already developed dangerous behaviour towards humans should seek immediate professional help. With the help of an experienced pet behaviourist, most of these problems can be overcome with patience and care. If you are unable to find a behaviourist in your area, the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Councillors) run a directory of behaviourists within Great Britain. You can also click here to see the services we offer in this field.

Rarely is a dog aggressive to humans for no reason. In the vast majority of cases, dog aggression is simply a response to a stressful situation. The main reasons for aggressive behaviour are as follows:

You welcome Angela, I really do not what to advise, but there will be someone along soon to guide you................in the meantime I have found another article for you to read

Threatening and Aggressive Behavior Towards People

Before assuming this is a behavior problem, have your dog examined by your veterinarian. Anything that is making your dog uncomfortable or irritable, such as an abscessed tooth or ear infection, can lower his threshold for threats and aggression. So can certain medications and other medical problems.

I would strongly advise with any aggression problems that you are referred by your vet, to a dog behaviourist.

Zak was predisposed to people aggression, and had been trained from an early age. In fact he actually flew through his puppy, intermediate, and advanced training with flying colours, but despite all this, I could never truly trust him with strangers.

I was pack leader in every way with Zak, and he learned his place within our family extremely quickly. I will never know why he distrusted strangers, and whilst I do agree that the majority of problems dogs are a result of their owners, I strongly believe that with Zak, this was not the case.

A very prominent dog trainer, once offered us a lot of money for Zak to become a service dog, saying that he was wasted as a family pet, but I could not, and would not part with him.

Don't despair, but please speak with your vet

Hi,
Kaiser seems similar to my dog Brandy in a lot of ways (although Brandy is agressive towards oth people and dogs). Sorry I am not able to offer any useful advice as I am in a very similar position to you and as desparate as you are for answers/solutions.

I noticed that you mentioned you had sent Kaiser away for a 3 week training course. Would I be correct in assuming that this made little or no difference to his behaviour then?

I have been thinking about the residential course but having spoken to the head office they advised me that the nearest one that could deal with the behaviours in question is in Wales (a fair drive from Kent where I live). I would be prepared to send her on the course if I believed that it would make a difference but I am interested to hear of others experiences first.

Good Luck!

aggression

Hi brandy

No I wouldnt recommend anyone sending ther dog away for training.
I now go to a training school each week and they help me a lot Kaiser is still muzzled and still isnt liking people but at least they are training me to deal with it.Some people at training are tutting and sighing when we walk in but I think its there problem not mine. Kaiser is fine doing all the things at training sit stay down stay ect and when I leave him he goes after no one so it is a protecting thing but even though it gets me down sometimes I am learning to deal with it but my time over again with Kaiser I would NOT send him away.
ANGELA.

Angela I really admire you for not letting people's petty tutting put you off going to training....you are clearly making good progress and I'm sure you'll get there with Kaiser.

He's very lucky to have such a good mum, who hasn't given up on him

I can totally relate to not wanting to work and to spend time with the dogs.....if I had my way I'd have a pack of Shepherds and never work again but sadly until a lottery win comes my way I'll have to keep working *sigh*

Don't forget to post some updated pics of Kaiser, I'd love to see him
