Commands in German?

First of all, apologies if this is already a thread, but i did try and search but when you type in keyword "german", well you can imagine, it comes up with the whole forum!

Anyways, on to my question.

I have heard that is have been proven that German Shepherds will respond better to the german language because of the short, abrupt tones of the language that they were brought up with., for example in training and general day to day commands.

Anyone else heard of this?

The interesting thing is that Layla came from Quebec which is predominately French speaking.
For the first month or so I had a small sheet of paper in my shirt pocket with phonetic French commands on it....come, sit, leave it, etc.

I would use the French word followed by the English word. After about 3 weeks to a month I didn't need to do that anymore. You could say she speaks English now..

Haven't tried German words myself, as this transformation has been quite enough, thank you. I'm fluent in German also, but I'm happy with her understanding at this point, so I'll leave it alone.

Bilingual is good enough, don't need to make her trilingual..I think she barks with an accent though.

I can fully understand the benefit and need to give commands in German to a dog born and raised in Germany, then imported to this country, but I honestly don't get what benefit it would be to a dog born in this country For almost 13 years I had a Sharpei, does that mean he would have understood me better if I'd have given him commands in Chinese? My OH's Great Granparents were French, speak to him in French and you might as well be talking Pingu!

Just my opinion, but I think giving German commands to a British born dog, owned by Brits sounds a bit pretentious.

That really made me laugh

I have to say I'm not sure why you need to speak to them in German....sorry no offence meant to anyone just don't get it unless the dog was born and bred in Germany....

Some of the commands seem more direct to me - platz for example sounds more descriptive than down.

But fetch sounds better than bring / bringen which sounds weaker. I'd rather say Stay than Bleip in a public area too!
