Halti Training
Hi guys,
I've taken Layla off her halti and back on the regular collar after going on 5 months of halti training.
When we first got her, she pulled pretty bad on the regular collar and it was just too much trouble and effort trying to right things with the collar, so we put a halti on her.
The control was just soooo much easier with it, as now she was much easier to train in what was required of her on her daily walks. The halti also allowed me to stop the constant side to side action with a gentle pull in the direction I wanted her to go and the side I wanted her to stay on.
As time went on and she got accustomed to it, (even though she hated it ) I was also able to let her off leash with it.
Just a couple of days ago we put her back on her regular collar and decided to see how that would work now. Surprisingly, much better than I even expected. I can now handle her in a similar fashion as when she was wearing a halti. Either the halti actually worked, or she hated it so much she's being careful so we don't put it on her again.
Actually, no, I must say for those that ask about them once in awhile, I think the halti made the job just so much easier.

I have found them really helpful in the past with Ozzy, he got to the stage where he didn't need it any more. Maxwell is wearing one at the moment and although he wasnt keen at first, he has got used to it and he is easier to control. I have a much better contact with him. He tends to pull alot with just a lead and collar and hes a strong lad.
Well done for all your hard work though, it sounds like it has paid off. Now you can enjoy lovely walks with Layla without getting a dislocated shoulder! xx

pappy wont keep a halti on, he slips out of it. i could do with pappy wearing a halti at the moment as well, after his attack, although hes not as jumpy as he was, if he does hear a loud bang, he can just suddenly jump and go to run quick and he hurts my shoulder pulling quick. as hes a big dog now. its annoying as was good on a lead before

I used the halti for Bonnie after she barked at a little girl, I didn't like the idea of them before that and never really had a problem walking her but I used it for the control after the barking incident. It has been brilliant and seems to have calmed her a little too... I don't know if it's the tightening of the halti when she trys to bark at people or simply that she felt I was more in control of her ?? I took her out 2 nights ago and managed to lose it She has obviously had walks since them without it and I must say she has been very good so I think the months of walking with it made a massive diffrerence... I'm still unsure whether to buy a new on or not
Wolfe, well done mate Layla has came on brilliant!!!

Aww that is pretty annoying especially as it wasn't your fault or pappys! It does give you better contact and stops pulling. Maybe the halti isn't tight enough? I know ozzy and maxwell have slipped out if it's not quite tight enough. I imagine after what he's been through he's a bit skittish but I'm sure with time it will get better. I really feel for both of you xx hugs xx

It's true, they're not for every dog. Layla slipped out of hers a few times at first as well, but I devised a way just for that kind of thing.
I put a regular collar on and then put the halti on. I had a double headed clasp that would attach to one ring in the halti and the ring in the collar. So, when she did manage to slip it off, (which is usually by pulling backwards) the double clasp was still attached to the collar and I was still able to hold onto her and put the halti right back on.
With a little practice you can put it on and take it off without removing the double clasp. Always be sure the halti is adjusted tightly enough. I think I may have been put off the halti if I hadn't used the little device I made up.

Hope it works for you Vicky. Nothing more annoying then having your dog yanking your arm when you're trying to walk him.
If my explanation wasn't quite clear enough, please feel free to let me know and I'll snap a pic of how I had it set up with Layla.
