GSD "Stand"

Now dont laugh at me but - having never entered any of my previous GSDs in any sort of show it amazes me how people get their dogs to stand properly with the leg back - how do you do that???

I only started this with Diesel for the socialisation and would never take it seriously but when I have been out with Jesterjenn and her dogs both Diesel and I have really enjoyed it.

So guys how do you get your dogs to stand properly and look so good?

Caryll is a jewel in the rough
The way I used to do it was to stand in front of my dog (facing him), take hold of the collar both sides & ease him slowly forward, saying "stand" in a long drawn out sort of way. As he walks forward watch his back legs & as soon as his back legs are correct, stop & tell him to stay. Then look at his front legs. If they are not level with each other just touch one of them with your foot to move ita feaction forward or back.

I have to say that, although I didn't take him to ringcraft classes, I did have the help of a GSD breeder to watch & correct me when I went wrong.

We teach all the positions in all different contexts starting with the dog doing the sit, down and stand in a special box (to keep them straight when they do it).

Then you take them out of the box and get them to do them next to you (which, for some reason, they find really confusing even if you're only half a meter away from the box).

Then you get them to do it on tables, in motion, in as many different ways/places in as many different orders you can think of until its 100% in their head.

Just my opinion... I don't like it; seems contrived and unnatural if it's a position the dog doesn't naturally go into. Mine know Stand as a command, as they know Sit and Down. But having legs in a certain position and distance just for looks, I don't see the point, sorry.

I agree with you Anni, although Bailey sometimes does it naturally which I think is from his breeding so I'm sure its not uncomfortable. But if I was to put him in that position he will almost certainly move from it.
He gets bombed out of a lot of shows with a comment of "He needs ringcraft training" I have a standard answer to that which I wont reveal
Anyway thats enough from me, I'm off
