Tips for Running with your dog?

Does anyone have any advice about what to do... or not do when running with your dog (for the first time) Jazz is now 1 so I have been told its ok for her to do a bit of running (walking quickly for her!) with me.

Any advice much appreciated...

Anni is your best bet for this the only running I used to do was to teach them to gait proper on a 8ft lead

Yep, I run with mine. I go out every other day first thing, so this morning we did just over 4 miles in the rain. Love it!

I waited until Zee was a year to run with her due to bone development (previously ran with Remus anyway) and I built the distance up gradually with her, though she was fit enough anyway as she gets plenty of off-lead running.

My advice would be get a harness for Jazz so there's no pressure on her neck. Plenty out there. I use a k9 working dog one, it doesn't rub under their legs and the girth and chest straps are adjustable so you can get a better fit on the dog.

You can buy specific CaniX running belts for you to wear, but I think they're overpriced. I use a standard small running waist pack (Inov8 one) and attach 2 carabiners onto the strap to attach each of their normal leads to.

I don't use bungee leads as they're too long for me - I run on mixed terrain which includes busy road pavements in part to get to woodland or tracks, so I prefer the dogs near me when they're attached. When we get to an off-road bit I unclip them and just wrap leads around my waist & clip together.

Teach the dog running commands. This is vital as I run with 2 dogs attached to me; their combined weight is over 70kg and I weigh 49kg. Left, Right, Get on, Steady, Leave it! and Whoooaaah!

Anything else you want to know just ask!

Scootering looks fun, I'd love to have a go at that. Your comment about the daylight hours on the exercise thread reminded me... the dogs' harnesses have an elastic loop on top you can attach a torch to, so I'm going to use that in the winter - get them lit up like Christmas trees for visibility when we run.
