Definitely try one of the GSDL clubs in the link Stuart has provided.

As for the age you start training the puppy, everyone will say different and it depends on the puppy but, in my opinion I'd just house train them and make sure they're happy, healthy and social puppies for the first few months, wait till its finished teething and start your proper schutzhund obedience at about 5-6 months.

Tracking you can do with little scent pads from an earlier age if they've got good food drive.

Most important of all is don't try to do any protection before the obedience is good.

As I said those are just my opinions and lots of people will say different. Its also very frustrating waiting until they're 5 months to start training them properly but its like my old dad says, 'its not a race'

We're aiming to have all our GSD's show graded, breed surveyed and working qualified in our kennel over the next couple of years.

So far we've got one male and one female thats done all 3, one female thats Schutzhund 3 but no show or breed survey, one female that will definitely do all 3 but is at the moment too young and a lot of puppies that will hopefully do all 3 (including my own little princess puppy Anti!)

Its great bringing the show and working worlds together I think its a farce that they've become so divergent when theres no need for them to be. In Germany they are far more integrated.

i no i think it stupid how ppl are saying u cant have a show breed as a worker or visa versa its a gsd for crist sake there abilities are limitless. well i think in any ways. my dog will be great at both coz i will train him at both, i think if a dog is only shown one way thats the way it will take, but if shown many way u will bring out the best in the breed and prove ppl wrong. alot of ppl with critasise this but i think all gsds are great even if there sloped backed straight. and i will probz be hated for this but i prefer the slope backed to be honist

I am the first to say I have no idea about show dogs,.. but as it is right now, I find it difficult to see how a working dog can also be a good show dog.

We have seen only resently how some show dogs appear, and many of us here do not like the way that modern show dogs are going,...so how can a dog that is good at working also be good enough to show.

To my view on things, the two types of dogs are completly the opposite
