Told off today...

I don't know if I'm angry or just a bit embarrassed by this...

I went to the GSD rally @ Perry Barr Common in Birmingham today, met with a few other lovely people and dogs from this forum. This is the first time I have been to a dog show like this.

When we arrived, I took Max out the car boot and understandbly he was excited. There was lots of other dogs. As I was taking some things out of the car I turned to Max and said "sit down Max" and admitedly he didn't sit straight away...however within a second of me doing this a completely random women walking past, stopped and looked at me and said "oh well clearly you have never been to an obedience class have you? It is "sit" not "sit down" fancy giving the dog two commands no wonder he does't listen to you" and then she just carried on!

I though my other half was going to flip his lid and I just wanted the ground to swollow me up...In theory I know she's probably right, I'm confusing him but it really got to me...I think I'm being too sensitive but I felt like I was being judged straight away and I think thats what put me off entering things...

Oh Charllote,.. dont let it get to you,.. words dont mean a thing to a dog, it is only sounds to them,..if you had trained Max to `sit` by saying `stand on your head` he would do it just as well.

Now that would have made to old battle axe fume,...lol

Shame your day was marred by a know it all.
Some people are just so rude, and cannot keep their opinions to themselves.
I have been told the same thing in the past and I try to keep it to one word commands so as not to confuse Ted. I also use "down" for when he jumps up and I have been told not to do that and use the "Off" command instead.
But I was told in a nice way, not by some random woman who poked her nose in. Dog shows can be great fun but they can attract the kind of "Expert" that you don't need too.
And do you remember my definition of expert????
Chin up, just poke your tongue out next time.

Aww Chazz..sorry about the rude reception you got. Some people are just numbskulls with no consideration for other peoples' feelings at all.
That's the human race for ya. Cheer up hun, you're a great person.

I had not thought of it like that Stuart, your right...I thought Matt was going to flip, she totally took us off guard. We have laughed about it since and done some snobby impressions of her telling me off for being a terrible owner lol x

she wasn't the dog trainer she thought she was. dogs do and can learn 2 and 3 syllable words and phrases. People like her probably think dogs only have a limited amount of words they can learn but dogs can learn 100's of words and phrases Attila one of the top freestyle handlers little bitch Fly know over 300 words Bob my Min Pin knows hide your face and cross your paws as well as two word and one word commands so the egg's on her face
