Its the same with everything in dog training you have to judge whats appropriate for the dog depending on how they're learning. Dad starts deviating from straight lines with diagonal 'step overs' when they're comfortable with straight lines.
We track on lots of different surfaces. You can see flashes at the beginning of the video of Tilly tracking on short grass, Kai tracking on Wheat Stubble and Gilly in Clover. I've posted pictures of Kai and Gilly tracking on a field with sheep grazing on it and we often track on common ground which features a range of wild unkept surfaces criss crossed with animal and vehicle tracks thats often extremely windswept.
If you only track on one type of ground they'll obviously get really good at that particular surface, which is why you see a lot of people get really good trial scores at their home clubs but fall apart when they trial away from home. Kai has scored 100 in Schutzhund 1 away from home in a club trial in Germany, 98 Schutzhund 2 at a sort of home trial at Severnside and 98 away at Sheffield so he's pretty consistent everywhere.
When dad trains in Germany they often track on ploughed dirt in trials, which is a totally different ball game altogether and is something that often stumps the British team at the world championships as its really difficult to find ploughed dirt to track on in the UK.
Next year we're going to attempt an FH with Kai which is an advanced tracking qualification where they track over a range of surfaces including tarmac. We haven't tried that yet but we're concentrating on surfaces that are most likely to come up in future competitions at the moment
