Dog training courses??
Hello All,
I have read a few posts where people have talked about going on intensive training courses (3-4 days)
I just wondered if anyone new of any such places in the surrey or hampshire area?
I have a male GSD that i believe to be 4 years old, he is wonderful around dogs that he knows and enjoys nothing more than a good run around the woods. However if he sees a dog while he is on the lead (of of it) that he doesnt know he barks and lunges towards them, this makes it impossible for my partner to walk him as she also has our 8 month old son to worry about in the pushchair.
I think that the main problem is that he wants to say hello but only knows how to do it in a loud and intimidating manner.
Thank you in advance
Matt (and sabre)

Can I ask how this makes it impossible?
Both of my two kick off at other dogs whilst on lead, and I walk them with my son in a pushchair also. I just put them on training leads and put the leads as a sash, so I can keep both hands on the pram, and have my body's weight/strength to hold them instead of just my arm.

Can you get as far as stevenage? I did a 3 day intensive course at Barking Mad in February and it was blooming fantastic. My monster was similar to yours and it was a right nightmare to take him out in public. As long as you know its not a quick fix and that if you aren't consistent it wont work then I highly recommend it!

Thanks DelsMum,
I will look them up....(im hoping they have a website)
jesterjenn, i think its mainly confidence, its not a massive problem because i walk him a few times a day, but my partner would like to be able to take him out through the woods while im at work.
its a shame because for me the most enjoyable thing about owning a dog is being able to take them for a walk and being able to see them enjoying themselves.
We will keep working hard at it, and will succeed
Thanks again.

Ahhh fair enough. My hubby won't walk my two, for the confidence reason, so I fully understand (and that's without the pram lol).
Is he ok offlead? Would the woods not be a good place for offlead fun?

hes ok off lead with dogs he knows, but if not he likes to chase them and have a good bark and while he isnt aggressive, his re call will go out the window during this time and people who own dogs but dont know anything about them arent normally impressed when a big german shepherd is chasing there spaniel, because as we all know any german shepherd that barks in automatically aggressive

Do you have a headcollar for him to help control him when he barks/lunges? I find them a godsend with my two

yes we have a halti and i believe its called a gencon or similer
I find them both very good when he sees another dog,
After about the first 5 minutes of the walk he will walk perfectly to heel, that is untill he sees a dog, cat, plastic bag bird or squirrel that he thinks he can chase
