Jumping into the back of the car/boot

I have quite a high boot and since Tegan was born we have assisted her into the boot as originally it was too high for her to jump.

Now however she is 11 months old and more than capable of jumping into the boot - she just won't.

Front paws up assisted back end in is the routine !

In fact someone stopped me the other day to commiserate with me in that her back end had gone !

I know its only a training issue and she is simply doing what she has already done before so can anyone assist with some training tips to get her into the habit of jumping in ?

I had this problem when my lad was younger, can't remember how we got over it, it did reach a point where he would get ready to jump in by still needed a hand touching his back to jump up.
Lots of encorougement and praise when they manage it.
Taught him to walk up a ramp into car last year that was far simpler

Why do people always think a GSD will have a problem back end!

Have you tried to lure her into the boot with food or a toy? Can you sit on the back seat and lean over into the boot to offer her the treat, she may well then be happy to jump in.

Put a towel covering the gap between the boot and the ground, some dogs don't like being able to see through...

Start at the begining, find a low box, have him jump up onto it for a treat, when he is doing that all the time, find a bigger box and repeat, building higher each time, once he is used to that, sit yourself in the boot and offer the treat, he will soon learn how its done.

Either that or drive away without him,..he is very capable of jumping in, its just that you have trained him to wait untill he is lifted up,.. he is really being an obeident dog

Bellon is only 16 weeks but has just started to jump into the back of my van by himself

Dad told me a story of a German dog trainer who came to live in England and for the sheer fact of being German, obviously, everyone thought she was the most magnificent dog trainer ever.

However, she fell into the same trap as you. Had a dog from a puppy, lifted it into the car every day until it was about 12 months and then it refused to learn how to jump in.

This dog was almost bigger than her by that point...

Just goes to show even hardened supposed dog trainers have the same problems as everyone else.

Oh bless her, hopefully she will re-learn. However I think it's no bad thing if they can use a ramp - Lukey can't by the way It's a useful thing if they have had an op or they are older.

Olli is the same - lazy beast! I even have to just about drag him to get his front paws up. There is no gap between bumper and car so he can't blame that. At 7 months, 30kg and rising it's becoming more and more difficult to lift him into the boot!

That said he's quite capable of jumping onto the sofa, up onto the windowsill and sitting there like an effing antique vase when he knows fine well he shouldn't be there!
