DelsMum has a spectacular aura about
Distance control

I'm after some tips please chaps!
Have hit a bit of brick wall with JL and his send aways/downs at a distance.
If I tell him 'away' off he goes no problem but as soon as I say 'down' he comes shooting back to my side and throws himself down at my feet. He has a very good 'down' and hits the floor before you've finished saying the word usually but he just doesn't want to do it away from me. My trainer has suggested throwing the ball out to where he was when I said it so he associates being rewarded away from me but I just wondered if anyone else has had this and has any other suggestions? I've tried when we are on walks and he is away from me having a sniff and he still does it. The curse of the velcro dog lol

When we were teaching the dogs distance control in class, we used a long line to restrain the dog from returning. We started with sits and once they mastered that moved on to downs then stands. If you have a long line, and hook it through a railings or something and clip it onto the collar and you keep hold of the other end. To start off, only be a couple of steps away, then gradually build up the distance.

I train mine the emergency stop/Down.
You need two people really until the dog understands what you need them to do.
I would use a harness and a longine for teaching this.
The second person needs to hold the end of the long line and you need to call JL but not the same as a recall so no excitement in your voice (he will know something is different) when he starts to come the line should be tightened a little when he gets to the middle point and you need to say down or stop whatever you want to use.
JL will feel the gentle tug and will stop, eventually you want to get him in the down position.
Do this until he starts to stop without the line being tightened.
It took about 5 goes with the Boys and they go down on command anywhere.
Kaiser has to do this for his search and rescue training.
I always go to the dog and praise when they do this and reward with treat or toy.

Sully Monster will become famous soon enough
During Sully's demonic phase i had him tied to a goal post on a long line and so was able to do lots of training building the distance further and further away and obviously he couldnt follow. Could you go back to basics and start off increasing the distance doing it in the house and garden before trying it on walks

My tip would be go back to the down stay and increase the distance you move away gradually. Also NEVER reward JL if he moves from the down position. Which also means never recall him from a down position either.

Most dogs if they have a recall with come back to you when you call them from any position so you shouldnt need to practice this. It takes more control for them to be velcro'd to the ground and not move until mum returns.
