Crazy dog!

Hi all,

I know all dogs do this. But when I take Hannah out for a run in the field, she'll quite often have a crazy little spell of tearing around the field. Which I love her doing, because it's good exercise and she just loves it. But she's taking to running away then turning around and running directly at me. She jarred my knee quite badly the other week, and the thought that she's gonna get bigger and do that to me is quite alarming

Is there a technique to getting her to run around me. Because it's really hard to predict which way she's going to go. I've been managing to jump out of the way at the last minute. But it's bloody scary. I know she's not trying to hurt me. She's just all excited at being in the field and wants to play. But I won't be able to play if she injures me

If you find out let me know...........Sheebs still does it........hurtles towards you then turns at the last minute. One time she caught the back of my legs and I went up into the air and landed with a crash on my arse........it was like something out of a comedy sketch. I couldn't move for laughing........but it didn't half hurt.

She also used to grab at the cuff of my coat as she tears past.....much to my sons amusement as he thought it was 'cool just like a police dog'.....luckily she seems to have lost interest in this game.

Ok I shouldnt laugh but the mental pictures I have of people being knocked on their butts has me rofl!!

It is rather daunting having the dogs runing straight at you, when I had a collie and a terrier they used to run straight at me the cross just in front, close enough to make me cringe waiting for impact!!

The trick I use with my collie and Tess is as they tear towards me is to hold my hand up like a copper and say "steady" very firmly. When they slow down near me they get praised. Jack the collie is still very hit or miss but Tess knows to slow down when she is near me.

I must admit I love it when they go on their crazy 'freedom' sprint!! Heck of a sight!!

Luckily Diesel doesn't and has never run at me, he does chase around with his GSD friend Tala and you do need to be aware of where they are...lol....

I think if Diesel did start to run at me I would do as Allycat does, hand up in a stop gesture to slow them down.

Fynn the collie is a expert at doing this , her eyes get bright, she picks up speed , and I swear she is laughing as she comes full pelt towards me she turns just at the last minute as I stand there curseing lol

Lol I'm glad I'm not the only one who stands there cringing and waiting for impact. She does seem to manage to turn before she hits me mostly. But sometimes the clumsy puppy in her comes back and thats it, I go flying. Will try the "steady" command, otherwise I'd better by some padding, like the stuff Ice Hockey goalies wear. :-)

A friend of mine snapped her leg bone because her Retriever and a Lab were playing in the manner stated, she's now had it pinned twice!!! Scares the crap outta me!

I'd DEFINITELY go with a 'steady' cue, along with the hand signal, many dogs take on the body language more than the cue or tone, but putting all in place should help!
