What to do......
Ok I'll try and make this as brief as possible,
Dalton has been trained from 8 weeks, how to do his business on command and all the basics, we did the puppy foundation course from the kennel club which he passed at about 17 weeks if i remember correctly, Any how the trainer then was nice but more into collies ans smaller breeds.
So found another Trainer, who has GSD's himself, talked a good talk, and we went training with him....The lobger we went the worse Dalton behaved, to the point where most weeks we were sent down the other field for disrupting class, by 21 weeks he was bloody evil, he used to bite, growl, bark, wouldnt walk on a lead, his recall had gone God knows where, i was convinced he had 666 marked on his body somewhere lol, I kid you not.
We stopped going training because i wasnt going to pay money to be told "he will come good". when infact he was a disaster waiting to happen and the trainer didnt seem bothered in helping me correct Daltons's behaviour, i would of paid for a 1-2-1 no problem.
Anyway after lots of crying, and thinking that i had more dog than i could handle, btten off much more than i could chew, I searched and got Dalton toy motivated, in weeks that followed he started to correct behaviour, it worked brilliantly and will do anything you ask with his toy, and lately doesnt need the toy very much at all, he will do a bootiful recall, leaveit etc without any pay off other than "yes" and a good boy etc.
We are working on distance command, which he is doing really well, his prey drive is controllable, and has done a complete 360 in terms of behaviour, you couldnt ask for a better behaved 10 month old.
Anyway waffle over, my dilemma now is after searching within a set distance of home, i cant find a trainer with equipment, or is willing to look at the way we work, having there own ideas, which i respect, But Dalton wont react to a bit of cheese, the pay off has to be huge, food isnt big enough, so.......do i go back to this old trainer and just adapt things to my wa of working, or just keep training on my own, Dalton is a worker, need the stimulation otherwise he is a demon lol. I guess, its all about wanting to make sure Im doing stuff right with him, that he is on the right track, I dunno im confused
What do ya reckon
xx

could be worth a call to the other trainer and see if he would be willing to come watch you work and see if he is willing to work with you?

Do you mean my old trainer Beki, see if he will work my way and adapt things,
I am willing to listen to ideas, I dont just want to work my way, if that makes sense. Just that most like treat rewards, which D wont really have

Well, I'd never usually attempt to give advice about training, but this is different! After reading your post I'd say don't go back!!
Sounds like you have done a better job yourself, and you don't want to be taking steps backwards again like last time!!
Stick with it, you don't want that trainer (tho it doesnt sound like he should call himself that!) spoiling all the good work you have done so far!!
It sounds like you know what you are doing and its working well, I'd say carry on as you are!
Julie.

Nothing to add in ideas but congrats in what you have accomplished on your own.

Hmm I would be reluctant to go back too hun....you have done so well on your own so far.
Are there no other trainers who are within your area that you could check out??

Yes your right, I was having a moment of woe i think, I liked Dalton being with the other dogs at class, and the whole atmosphere of being in a large group of people all training rather than being on me lonesome. But I would be slightly miffed I dalton went back to Demon Dog mode, Crickey I would be grey.
He does spend alot of time with Dogs on the field where I live so i guess he isnt missing out on socialising, and even the little dogs play with him the owners dont mind.......Now.
I never thought about him reverting back to his old ways, by going back to class, doh numpty alert. Plus reverting backward at his size now would be mega, i wouldnt be able to handle him, I use brains not brawn with him already haha.
I may have to look even futher afield for a trainer who can push him futher as he gets older.
My old trainer from what ive been told did mention Dalton was a rescue dog waiting to happen, lol, but a few people have said that to me.
But yes he has come good, and had great advice if i have had the odd issue with him from everyone on here.
We have got time to keep looking, but i guess i had given up as good ones are few and far between, the nice trainers on here live like forever away. and none of them will move down to here, lol, I have asked them to move near me.
But for now i cant ask anymore of Dalton for his age, but want to plan ahead if that makes sense
xx
