Red face Ball reward

Ive recently purchased 2 foam balls excellent they are..

fritz is so ball driven its untrue
its as if the only plus reward would be a chicken carcass or a steak

at one point i deceided to add a second ball because fritz was so driven and wouldnt give up the ball without a game of cat and mouse or a wrestle...

so i thought right i'll throw ball one when he returns i'll trow ball 2 (he then drops ball one retrieves ball 2 as reward for dropping ball one) sigh

that works for around 3 or four attempts then he keeps ball 2 and tries to carry ball one... so there we are back at square one..

ive taken to throwing the ball in the kitchen as a reward like catch game instant win after a (down stay)..

outside hes a prat or im the prat regards the fetch, whoops sorry..

so what can I try???
Ive also bought a clicker which i did load earlier this week... as soon as he sees the clicker hes down n stays lol...

please help

I have taught Ellie 'drop' kinda by flook. she is obbsesed by balls on a rope and when she comes back i say drop the second she drops i throw the other one. work in it indoors to start off with with toys and things that arent sooooo high value then get that nice and strong then work on it with the balls. if he doesnt drop, ignore/turn ur back be really really boring but as soon as he drops be the best thing ever

thats what id try anyway, they soon cotton on its much more fun to drop the ball than hold on to it

1. I say Ready!!!!
2. Down
3 throw the ball, I say ermmm Fetch

Fritz runs like theres no tommorow
Picks up the ball

4. I encourage come *whilst hes carrying the ball
as Fritz approaches me
5. I say drop!

when fritz Drops the ball, I then throw ball 2

then back to ^^^ 3.

I thought that fritz getting ball 2 as the reward it would reinforce Drop
then become almost automated to drop on return...

in the house Fritz is fab and always has its only last few weeks I noticed the possesion with the ball.... so then i tried to introduce the tug game etc etc in between... i've tried just turning my back and looking over the shoulder.. and tried just tottally ignoring until he drops the ball...... how long do you want to wait!!! lol

so looks like ive created some bad bahaviour.... *ball possesion*
he seems to think the games over when he drops the ball...

Ive also tried to quickly throw the ball at just good things he does..
basically i think ive ruined fritz.. ive certainly done something wrong somewhere.. outside he he does the stated above a total of 3 maybe 4 times then tries to claim both balls...

the stated above is as quick as he runs... and returns then drops so im pretty knackered.. im going grey so i do need someone that can use some hair dye..

ive made a balls up hope that explains it

You need to wait for him to drop the ball, dont speak, when he drops the ball, say "Drop it" or whatever you use, this way he knows what it means, If you day Drop while he is holding it, then you are re-inforcing that hodling the ball means drop.
Kind of like saying heel when a dog is pulling, he thinks heel mean pull.
Use the cue word as he is doing the behaviour you want, or you are giving him mixed signals
Dont use the cue word as a command until he understand what it means 100%

Going on from Sarahs post above, sometimes people tend to forget that the dog doesnt speak our language, all it is hearing is different sounds.

So in order for him to know what sound means what, he has to do the deed first,..once he has learnt, then he know what each sound means.

sit him in front of you get him to hold the ball in his mouth give the command hand and help him to drop ball into your hand if he drops it ignore and no reward if he trys to put in yoour hand take it and reward giving time he will return the ball to yout hand reward with something other than another ball chicken etc only give 1 command and help show him what you want at first after a few days he will start to return the ball into your hand then bring in the other ball at first hold your hand just under his chin to get him started xx

Red face

some reall good input there thanks!"!"!"!!!!

he did have it all conquered then over night seemed to just go pear shaped.. with just the odd time needing a little prompting.. above all I do think its the cross between expecting too much and taking for granted he understands me..

Who's going to help me carry this bag of bloody chicken for his reward ????

lmao

maybe i do speak too much, but doing around the house its great.. esp the kitchen loads of room... ive always had a ball in my pocket.. lol

yup sarah did nail it the language.. i wanna learn woof!!
i keep picking up bitches..
Stuart thanks and GypsyGSD toooooooooooooooo

going to try the hand bit....
