Cheeky new behaviour
When we got Murphy he wasn't interested in food at all, once we got Rusty a month later he became very greedy! It hasn't been too much of a problem, until last weekend. Nick made macaroni cheese and left it at the back of the counter, our housemates girlfriend then came and did some cooking and moved it to the front - and then they went out. We came home to find a smashed casserole dish, no macaroni cheese and lots and lots of blood. We checked them both over and worked out that Murphy must have cut his tongue eating off the smashed casserole dish, but kept an eye on them both incase there was any internal bleeding.
They have both been absolutely fine, but now Murphy won't stop trying to get stuff off the sides! We have had words with our housemate, and I don't think it will happen again. I guess it's just because he got such a high value reward before that he now thinks it's worth risking it?

personally would have a rule do not leave food on work tops. Far too much of a temptation.
I have a large very greedy rottie dog and he can reach and get anything.
Could tun out dangerous if they ate something not suited to dogs or as you found out smashed dishes doing so. Also possible if multiple dogs a fight could break out over the food.

Our foster dog is good at this,..or was, he can not only get stuff off the work surface, but open cupboards and the fridge.
So you need rules that everyone knows about,.. and in your case it is to leave nothing out that he can reach,..and he can reach further than you would think [ I will bet you ]
In our case we also need child locks on cupboards and fridge,..lol

Thanks guys.
We never usually leave food out, and I was pretty angry that they were so stupid to leave something cheesy right on the edge. I'm really just angry now that Murphy keeps trying his luck, something he wouldn't be doing if they'd followed the rules about stuff on the side!!
Somebody told me to put nasty tasting stuff out on the side to put him off - but that seems a little mean?

I can absolutely testify to that.... Do not leave ANYTHING on the worktop Bonnie ate a whole chicken carcass last week that resulted in a trip to the vet, a few days of worrying myself sick and my purse £300 lighter!!!!!
