Update on Kaiser, and advice desperately needed.

Well Kaiser will be 5 months on Saturday, where does time go

My first post on here, was about him, drinking his wee, and eating his poo! We started putting mixed herbs on his meals, which stopped him eating his poo, we're now back to square one, even putting herbs on his food, he finds his poo edible, we don't like him doing it, however that isn't the major issue here.

The drinking of wee, weeing in his bed space is still in progress We crate him at night time, and if we need to pop out briefly etc, we halved his crate, as he was using it as a toilet when he had the full run of it, which is still the issue, he doesn't poo in there, but is still weeing in it. He is doing this in his bed space I had to stay at my kids school this morning, for half an hr, came home, looked through the window, saw him just finishing a wee, then drinking it (gave him a sharp NO, which deters him, but we're back to square one again next time) I'm really at a loss here as what we can do! I have tryed spraying a 'get off' spray (stops aimals doing there business in the area) didn't work, have tryed giving him pineapple (as thought this would help with the wee issue aswell as the poo) didn't help!
I spoke to our vet, they have said its a bahaviour thing, and just to keep a constant eye on him (which is difficult during the night), but this was when he was younger, and we were told he would get out of the weeing in bed space/drinking it etc, but he hasn't. It tends to happen when we are out, but occasionally it happens during the night too, probably 4/5 nights out of 7 he's always let out before we go to bed (11.00pm) always has a wee, then we're up at 6am, so he's not in the crate for long periods (I generally still get up once during the night too, as I started leaving him all night, for 1 week, and I was getting up every morning with the room he's in stinking of wee, and him)

Really at my wits end, I've tryed so much, but if anyone has any other tips, it would be really appreciated, thanks

So sorry to hear he's still doing this, I am wondering if he's drinking it because he's worried about leaving it there, maybe shouting a firm no is actually making it worse?? Have you tried distracting him away from it with something tasty to eat or fun to play with?

I know this won't work during the night but maybe you need to get up and let him wee outside during the night to encourage him to go outside instead of in the crate?

xx

Thanks for your reply Lovegsd

We have tryed to distract him with his toys (he's more for toys than treats ) from when he was doing it when younger, its as though he does it out of anxiety, doesn't like being left alone for more than hlf hr, which unfortunately I don't always have control over, with being on call for school throughout the morning

I have been getting up during the night recently, to let him go for a wee, normally around 4am, so then he only has to go back into his crate for 2 more hrs, then we're all up, but even then I still get up at 6 with his bed wet with wee

When he was still with mum/dad, there was another shepherd in the home too (a bitch) and she was being allowed to clean up after Kaiser, both eating his poo, and drinking his wee, which we never knew about until we had brought Kaiser, on the day of picking him up, so was quite shocked the breeder was allowing this other bitch to do this, and I'm wondering if Kaiser has never forgotten this?

I just wished we had looked into this breeder a little more carefully!

Oh you poor thing, I've never had this so can't help but I do know what it's like to be at your wits end with something!!!

Might it be related to the separation anxiety thing? I really don't know but I'm sure it must be unusual. My baby girl will puke then eat that, as if she's 'tidying up', but never 'tidied up' wee or poo.

Hope someone can tell you what it's likely to be xxx

I would think the cleaning it up was a habit from what you said happened at the breeders to be honest but if at that age he cant go for a few hours without weeing I would be looking to something medical. I would go back to the vet and insist on some tests, or try a different vet. As I am sure a lot of us on here know there is a big difference in vets.

I can imagine its distressing. The poo thing lots of dogs do my Sami loves nothing more than a nice bit of poo be it hers or any other creatures.

Good advice from Tracy there, definitely worth chatting to the vet to rule out anything medical as he should be able to hold for longer.

If it's related to being left, you are going to need to show him that being alone is ok. My lad had separation anxiety when I took him on and we used to leave the room and come back in, leaving longer gaps each time and then leaving the house and coming back in at different intervals. We didn't fuss him before leaving or when we came back in, this way he learns that it's no big deal for you to come and go.

Thanks Zetstaff, it is so frustrating, our last boy was a miracle to housetrain, we had 1 accident from him int he house, stopped him half way through, popped him outside, and ever since that day he always did his business outdoors, unfortunately we lost him to Hip Dysplasia

Something medical, really? Certainly something I never thought of, and definately worth getting checked out Thank you.

It only seems to be when he's on his own when we've popped out, or gone to bed, when we're downstairs, he looks as us, to ask to go out to wee, what I can't get my head around is the fact he's always let out before I either go out, or go to bed, he always does a wee and/or a poo, I'm only out at the very maximum 1 hr, and 9 times out of 10, he has wee'd in his crate, its noticeable by his bed being wet, smelling of wee, and obviously when I let him out then, he no longer needs to go, because he's already done it!

How long should a 20 week old (this Sat) be able to hold himself for? Our last boy used to go at least 7 hrs, more if needed by this age, I'm just baffled.

Kaiser does seem to be quite stubborn too, which I guess isn't helping?

It could be a habit hes picked up or anxiety and both are a bugger to break but if hes weeing on his bedding I think thats unusual and would get him checked at the vets. And believe me I am not one for running to the vets with every last thing but I think its worth checking.

How often does he go for a wee? If hes asking to go out he obviously knows hes not supposed to do it in the house.

By 20 weeks I would expect a dog to be able to go overnight but still have to do the puppy dash outside before I had my wee!!!

I have just spoken to our vets, we have booked him in, to be seen tomorrow at 18.40. Spoke to the manager of the practice, she agreed that things need to be looked at. Thanks so much everyone for your advice, really appreciated Will keep you updated

Hi Sami

He wee's often, during the day he probably goes around 10/12 times, excluding weeing in the crate. During the night I let him out at 4am, normally he's dry up to then from being let out at 11pm , then I normally end up with a wet bed from him, when I'm up at 6

He does drink a fair amount (which got me thinking about diabetes ) I always remove his water between 22.00 and 22.30, he then has a little drink when I let him out at 4am, then he has a wee, then back in his crate and fresh water when I get up
