dog walking - argghh!!! want to start walking again properly

anyone got any ideas - kane goes out walking with his Dad and is as good as gold even to the point of putting on the collar lead halti.

I want to walk him what happens - he goes into faff mode - behaviourist been and advised but so expensive!!!

he pounces runs off then 10 minutes later i may manage to get the collar on - then its the same thing when trying to get the halti and then the lead on - pouncing and barking running off

when I used to walk him he jumped up and he would bite my left arm not aggressively just jumped up and attached himself to my coat - he did this frequently

so annoying cos i used to walk him for 50 mins three four times no probs

i started to use the pet controll things bad idea if anyone thinks about using one!!! DO NOT!!!

behaviourist says i gotta walk kane when badge is with me - not on my own - i want to walk this monkey and he aint winning

i need to stop him jumping up and barking - got to wear a muzzle too to stop him biting me he wants to get the muzzle off though doesnt like it - trying the muzzle training - again i emphasize it is not aggressive biting just an annoying habit he has got which needs stopping

i think hes become his dad's boy and doesnt want his mum to walk him and this makes me sad.

the behaviourist has helped but it is soooooo expensive. any ideas please people much appreciated.

I WANT TO WALK KANE AGAIN!!!! I WILL WALK HIM AGAIN but I want to do this sooner rather than leaving it too late

so desperate to walk him again as loved it

please help!!!!!!!!!!

Tedsmum will become famous soon enough
Afraid i don't have much to offer but have some questions.
Why do you say don't use the corrector spray? What happened when you did?
Also what lead/collar are you using?
Did the behaviourist not have any helpful suggestions to make?

I can only imagine that if my dog was faffing so much when I was trying to put on the collar and lead, I would just stop and go and sit down until he came to me and then I would try again. It may take an hour the first time but then I would reward him when he co operates.
The jumping up and biting is a hard one, a gencon would be my first try and then I would perhaps make no progress and stop for a short time every time he does it. Does he sit for you? You could make him sit whenever he is jumping up and calm him for a few seconds. The muzzle is an idea but it is not really tackling the habit as a whole. It's worth a try though even if he doesn't like it.
What is he like generally with you in terms of obedience? I think you need to do some regular work with him every day for 3 ten minute sessions. Just stuff like sit, stay and down. Get him used to taking you seriously and listening to you.
Sorry if this is all stuff you have tried already.

Pasted my reply from your other thread...

Revisit obedience commands with Kane: sit, down, etc. Go back to basics. Get him to sit before you put the lead on. If he doesn't do it, you put the lead down and ignore him. Then try again.

When he's hyper as you describe you stand less chance of getting him to do anything. Remus used to mouth my OH on walks, esp when first let off lead, but he never did it to me - just gave a happy bark! I told my OH every time Remus mouthed to put him back on lead, so his 'freedom' ended.

It sounds like excitement, but you do need to curb it. I'd work on the obedience angle combined with ignoring. Shout NO! when he does it and turn and walk away from him - what does he do?

Practice in less stimulating environments, like your garden, putting the lead / halti on.

For jumping up, i do this: hold firmly onto dog's front paws when it jumps up - they hate that, and will struggle to get down. Then when 4 paws are on the floor, dog gets praise / treat.

I can only emphasis what has been said before really. Kane see it as a game with you, hence the "faffing". Your OH is obviously less exciting with him hence he is able to do things better. Ignore unwanted behaviour, lots of praise when he does as YOU want!

Want does he work best for? Treats or toys? Which ever it is never be without!

How old is Kane?

the behaviourist and a trainer i phoned both said not to use the corrector sprays. they said it should be jsut me and the dog. they said to stop using the spray.

I try to walk him he jumps up and bites my arm non aggressively but he catched my arm and it hurts and bruises.

i used to walk him thats the annoying part for 50 mins three or four times I want to do that again.

It was suggested that i use high value treats such as chicken and cheese for walks which i now do.

i try and do sommands such as sit etc - i let him sniff and he does his business when he wants - always take plenty of poop bags.

i want to walk him past other dogs and people without any problems

Sounds like he's dictating things rather than you. You need to work on the obedience more. Allowing him to sniff, do his business etc is HIS part of the walk. You can do some mini bits of training during that though - if he's off-lead do recalls with the treats, or a quick session of sit-down-sit, or Watch. Possibilities are endless, so just get training!!
