Untamed GSD
Contrary to popular belief I do read a lot of these threads when I can I try & implement the advice but does anyone have, like me, a GSD who is not aggressive per se, but perhaps could be seen as so? I realise it's a failing on my part but Clay is never at the age of 3 going on 4 gonna be a mensa dog. He is gorgeous but does have some issues regarding guarding and barky behaviour. I'm afraid (well ashamed really, not afraid, let's get that clear) that he was let down in his early training by myself and we now have the consequence of a lovely GSD at home but one that can be seen as massive and a bit intimidiating by outsiders. I suppose really that I'm looking for other owners to fess up with the same difficulties but if not, as I suspect, advice please. Love him to bits and such a diamond at home but so guardy outside - not so much on the lead but with people walking by the house with windows open or a knock at the door....seriously if anyone knocks he goes ballistic - does anyone else experience this or is it just me and my badly trained Clay?

Our Jazmin goes balistic if some-one knocks at the door, she loves people, but home is her territory. She doesn't always get out of the window when I say. Working on that as well.

Yep me too. Ted is really guardy at home and goes mad if someone knocks at the door or just the sound of someones voice outside. Luckily we live in a close so we dont get much passing trade if you know what I mean. I have not really tried to tackle it too much as I figure it is a good thing to have a barking dog when the door goes or when someone is lurking.

No Zandi will bark if they knock or ring the door bell but will shut up when told and people can come straight in even strangers - if they are in uniform they can walk straight upto the window and look straight in if not he will bark.
Poly is the goby one here but will quiten when told, if she lies on the window cill she will bark at passerbys but enough means stop barking.

Well, Remus has in the last week started his first guardy barking... Previously he was completely silent at anyone knocking the door. But now he'll give one deep woof, and do the same if he hears something outside. It's great, at last a dog that guards! Zee is still silent though... and neither of them react to the postman, they just carry on snoozing. Oh well.

lol Audrey
the two words I use is 'enough' for when they are doing something I want to stop and 'don't' when they are thinking about doing something wrong they both sound harsher than 'no'

I have some success with getting Ted to stop, I have taught him "Quiet" which works like a charm ordinarily but when there is someone at the door he get double excited and takes time to stop. He will always let people in without a problem if I greet them but then does a puppy bark with excitement to greet them. None of its a problem though.
