Fritz reacted

Well i think i got problems developing.
Fritz & i the other day were in the woods, running round acting the fool hide n seek and doing some quick fetches, was working on "drop" get another ball's /hoop.. he loves it and i throw in dif directions opposite to last ones land location..
all out of the blue a jap akita and another dog came pounding up towards us, i blew whistle, distract fritz. but he'd seen, his hair went up. i thought shit whistle again and ran in the other direction no way.. the jap akita pinned him.. i ran towards him screaming at the owner.. then the other dog goes running into fritz.. then i found myself between firtz and 2 dogs i shit myself..
owner of the akita yanked his dog away as i then held fritz to stop him poor fka was shaking as much as me..the owner towed his dog with a damn rope and yes it was a rope.. big clip on the end..
calmed fritz right down then when others were out of sight i took him on his leash to a tap... and we walked a dif way home..

So yesterday being Saturday morning around lunch took fritz to teh same woods we frequent them daily and usually know the local dog walkers, those from the other day never seen in my life. theres also a pro dog walker takes a few dogs on there fritz has never ever been a problem with other dogs...
what happened same damn dogs but i was certain id come out at a diff time purposely done to avoid the same episode..

diff spot in the woods too.. fritzs hoop was thrown to the other side of the field he went to retrieve, damn akita comes hurling towards me, i wasnt afraid i was just aware and didnt rush to call fritz.. he'd seen it ran straight at it and pinned to the floor but his teeth and speed my god... fritz has never frightened me.. but yesterday he did..

what am i supposed to do now? have him on a long lead??? I assume he was guarding me.. again this man really gave his dog some hammer was no need at all and his attitude was disgusting.. Fritz is 2 july 31st again hes never ever been a problem with other dogs..

you need to calm down and relax fritz may not have a problem with other dogs but this one he has remembered,
some dogs when attacked will be dog specific if it is a one off if more attacks take place by the same breed/type then they may become breed/type specific - they rarely become aggressive to all dogs because of one incident

I wouldnt have expected anything else to be honest,... if my dog had been attacked and pinned one day,..and the situation repeated itself the next,..you wouldnt expect him to wait to be pinned again,..of course he is going to defend himself

Far to early to say he is now dog aggressive,..I would doubt that if he was ok before

Oh I'd have kakked myself too !!!!

Our last dog did this, would let the first incident go, + if we came across the same dog again, he'd get in first. Didn't alter how he was with other dogs though, some he liked, some he didn't.

The best advice I can give is to not go out expecting something to happen, if we're tense then they pick this up + get tense too. I'm the world's worst, but I've come a long way (I hope ).

This won't make him the same with all dogs I'm sure, well it didn't with mine

I understand what your thinking.
Kaiser got attacked and ever since hates smaller dogs and only males.
I suspect the Akita is entire felt threatened by Fritz who im assuming is also entire and the Akita was just being dominant with Fritz.
I also think thhats why the reverse happened when Fritz went for the Akita.
Its also a time for bitches to come into season Fritz is at that age and even if he is neutered another entire male or neutered male could be a threat.
I have exactly the same problem with Kaiser(mostly Labs)
If Fritz continues this behaviour I wuld come down really hard on him show him that you are in charge and you will protect him(he doesnt need to do this) Kaiser has got better since Ive become his leader and more confident but I do use a muzzle when he off lead and other dogs around just incase.
This is more for other owners to be aware than Kaiser biting another dog which he has never done. He has pinned them down and mouthed but thats it.

With everything he doesnt wrong Auds
He knows I mean it
Ive never hit him, grabbed hold of him or hurt him in anyway.
When he takes the p*** as the trainer puts it
Using a very stern voice, getting the warnings in beforehand in everything he does.
eg
Im on the lappy Kaiser comes up and nudges me, I used to pat him and give him attention, wrong
He is calling the shots he is saying Mum give me attention and now.
I dont allow him to call the shots anymore, I do
Now when he grumbles at another dog at training I only need to use my voice and he stops there and then. Same with Recall and yes 90% of the time he will come back even with distractions.
Its about me taking control so he knows he doesnt need too.
xxx

I would be very cautious about coming down hard on Fritz for this - after all he was just defending himself against a dog who was attacking him.

I think you have to decide what you want from your dog - do you want them to defend themselves if they are attacked? Or do you want him to just accept the attack and not respond to it? After all you cannot always keep other dogs away from them - it happens so suddenly sometimes and you may be some distance away.

Personally I have always let my dogs deal with it if they are attacked (with help from me of course), in fact sometimes I have actually shouted a warning to my dog and turned them towards a dog that I have spotted coming in from behind to attack mine. It can also stop dogs from attacking as they are faced with a dog who is giving out all the right signals in the first place.

Akita's can be very aggressive and can cause fights (some people use them as fighting dogs) so it could well be that Fritz will always respond to this dog in the future as he knows it is out to cause a fight. If you try and stop him defending himself you could end up creating more problems for yourself.

It does not mean that he will end up dog aggressive - after all this dog attacked him, he did not go looking for trouble.

I agree completly Sue,... you cant blame a dog for defending itself, otherwise you would end up with a very insecure, frightened dog,..with all the extra problems that situation would throw up

defending against another dog,..should not turn any dog into a dog aggressive dog,.. [ hows that for a tongue twister,..lol ]

The time I would come down hard on mine would be if any of them did this when they were not under any threat,.. defending, and aggresiveness are two different things
