Rumblings in the night!

Last night I woke up at midnight by Jerry trying to get on the bed. She has never done this before which I thought was really strange. As I pushed her to get her to go down off the bed I noticed she was trembling.

At first I thought someone had got into the house and had scared her but after I woke up properly I realised it was raining outside and I heard a faint rumble. It was then I realised the thunder had woken Jerry up! She was petrified. I know she doesn't like thunder as once while we were out she had "messed" in the kitchen when it had been thundering but by the time we got back she was ok.

I can't believe how upset she was by it. She lay on her bed whimpering, panting and shaking beyond control. I know you shouldn't nurture her behaviour but I did let her lie accross the bottom of the bed. At the next rumble she scrambled up next to me and burried her nose under my arm. I didn't stroke her or anything but felt so bad for her.

Is anyone elses dog that scared of thunder, what do I do when it happens again?

Poor Jerry!!! It is so hard when they are scared like that!!

I am lucky and all mine are not phased by thunder or fireworks! In fact Ozzie like to watch thunder storms and firework displays!

Only thing I can think, is one of those sounds DVDs to desensitise her to the sound?

I have never had a dog that reacts like that either - but it must have been very scary for her.

Perhaps as Laura said, a DVD would help. In the meantime, perhaps a radio left on if you know a storm is forecast, could help mask the sound, and make her feel not so alone.

Aww bless her heart, it must be horrible to see her so scared

Both mine are fine with thunder thank god as we have loads going on right on, maybe a dvd would be helpful or the radio as has been suggested.

It's a bit strange really as Fireworks don't bother her too much. When we first had her she was scared of the vacuum cleaner, stairs, washing machine and she over came all of those within a few weeks.

I think she has been kept outside in the past as all of the above are "house noises" that you would have thought would be an everyday occurance if kept indoors. I don't like to think of a pup ever being outside in a thunderstorm alone but it may well be the cause of her being so frightened.

I will try the dvd thing, if she overcame the other noises by desensitisation then perhaps thats the answer. She looked so pathetic it was a bit upsetting really my whole bed was trembling.

Thanks all

The trick is with the DVD is to put it on very quietly to start off with and gradually over time increase the volume. I really hope she gets over this as it must be so awful to watch get get so scared!!
