Crate Training

I still have my foster girl Nina who is a cattle dog cross. Although she is the smallest of the 4 dogs she is very hyperactive. She gets over an hour off lead exercise every day (minimum) but it's not always practical to take them out before leaving them for an hour or two.

The rescue group have told me to crate train Nina but I don't need to put the other three in a crate as they're not destructive.

I was wondering if any of the members who use crates have other dogs that they don't crate? If so any tips for using it on one of them?

I've been told to make Nina feel like it's her space and I've been given the steps to build it up - but my main concern is that she's the only one that will be in the crate and it doesn't seem fair?

I have an open plan house making it harder to close off part of the house.

I have one dog crated but she has been used to it since a puppy as they all have.

The others aren't crated anymore and it doesn't cause any problems for us as they just seem to accept that when we go out then Annie goes to her crate.

In fact she just takes herself off to it when she sees us getting ready to go out. Just follow the steps that you have been given and she should feel 'at home' in it.

The only problem I have is that they all want to go in it when we go out and it just isn't big enough

i crate sam at night and if i go out during the day(no more than about an hour) the other 2 are not crated. there bed is away from the crate which is tucked in an alcove. he doesnt make a fuss and settles quickly although he is a pup. all you can do is try and persevere. she may play up for a while but will soon get used to her rules...

I regularly have family and friends dogs to stay and always use a crate with them or Lizzy as she takes a few days to accept a guest if she doesn't walk with it weekly. So I have 3 or 4 not crated and 1 or 2 crated never causes any problems I only do it at night or if I'm not in as it's really only in the house she has issues and as I say after a few days she's fine but I leave the crates up incase I need them and Froo sleeps in hers out of choice and lizzy uses hers occasionally.
