Jealousy??

Sorry, me again, but need to post this before my brain frazzles and I forget!

Dex doesn't like other dogs being near me initially, and once he's ok with that he will still snap if I give another dog attention. Though some dogs like the collie we walk with he doesn't pay any attention to if I pay her attention... SO ...?

I don't feel this is something I should condone, but reality is I have no idea what to do about it!

We're supposed to be staying in Essex with my mum and other dog, a 3 year old Siberian Husky (Zak) who absolutely adores me, and I him, having had him since a pup and being his main human for his first year and a half.

I onder whether to cancel this trip entirely? try to find somewhere for Dex to stay here that isn't kennels? Take him still and find a way of introducing and showing him it's ok to share me for a few minutes.

Is this jealousy? Him being a posessive dominant male?

decisions
Would very much appreicate any thoughts and experience sharing on this.

Really off to bed now!
Night xx
And thank you in advance!

oh they also have a very submissive Bullmastiff x Rotty, who I'm not particularly worried about, it's mainly the potential clash between Dex and Zak...

Sounds like he is protecting/claiming you..... i don't want to get into the dominant/ hierarchy discussion, but from what you've said it seems he is cautious of allowing other dogs to interact with you because you are his. (as he see's it)

Have you tried ignoring dex when he comes over and how old is he?

I had this with Max when we first had Leo back. I made a point of telling Max no if he objected to Leo having a fuss and then making a point of fussing Leo. Once Max "allowed" this I would give him a fuss. Max was 100% my dog and very clingy so to be truthful he never fully got over having to share me. The compromise was he used to just shove in between Leo and me if he thought Leo was having too much attention.

Where in Essex? If you wanted to overnight your boy somewhere close I would recommend Puddles & Paws, in fact Jax is going to them friday during the day. He'll absolutely love it!!

The foster dog Nero did this when he arrived, he didnt like our own dogs anywhere near us,.. the only way to pet our own dogs was to pet him at the same time.

It took a little time, but it was a case of making a real effort to pet ours while trying to control Nero away,.. then when we stopped petting our dogs, then went over to pet Nero,.. he eventualy excepted the fact that he would also get attention without needing to keep the others away.

In Nero`s case I am sure it was jelousy, not him trying to be dominant.

It doesnt quite fit your situation, ...you dont have the time to do all this before meeting the husky,..and because it does take time, if you go, I would try to keep them apart, it seems a pity for you to cannel your trip

Diesel was like that when he was younger, it wasn't something I wanted from him so I used to ask him for a leave and then a sit and then fuss the other dog then praise him for being calm, although I never went ott with the fuss of another dog.

I think you need to ensure that you don't overly fuss the Huskey and ensure that Max isn't allowed to choose who you fuss either.
