Xenos decided yesterday to bolt - so fast - that he was choking to get away. What was he so scared of? Children laughing in a hallway two floors up. It was the worst freak out moment he has ever had and what made it worse, was my neighbour (who also has a GSD) was out on her porch. The woman looked absolutely shocked as she pulled her dog back into her home.

He seems to be having better days, then does this. We have a five year-old child at home, whom he adores. But he is fearful of other kids, tall men, obese people (especially) and any sudden noise. Despite getting him the rescue remedy - he still won't calm down if something arises.

People laugh when they seem him trying to scurry away. It's an odd sight to see a large GSD fearful like this, I'm sure. I don't know what to do, but my husband is scared now that Xenos will be a fear biter when he hits three.

We have five classes this week with a trainer and if all else fails, I think I will have to put him on medication. I just hate the thought of using these anti-anxiety meds, but what else can I do?

Does anyone else have a pup like ours? Feel alone in this :(

*sigh* I'm having an 'I am a useless owner' day...

This morning's walk off-lead in the fields, Remus spots Daisy, a springer x lab we meet occasionally. He tears over to her (ignoring my recall), knocks her straight over, she yelps, hides behind her mum and he just wags his tail wanting to play as though to say "what?" :frown:

I know it's him being too excited but as she was wary and hiding from him then, I put him back on lead until he'd calmed down a bit. They were fine together after that off-lead. Did I do the right thing?

Can anyone advise me what type of training would help me break this embarrassing habit of him approaching other dogs at the speed of an exocet missile?

I can't see a long line helping... he's seriously fast and weighs 10 kg less than me, so I don't fancy being pulled along the stubble fields on my front! He has very good recall, I can call him off chasing rabbits if I time it right, but meeting other dogs he just locks on and that's it.

Puppy mouthing and attitude!! Help!!

My 8 week old puppy is adorable and has settled in well to her new home, now the problem (and the only problem) is the constant mouthing, she really does hurt and my ankles have come in for a lot of stick! Thinking of getting some shin pads in fact, but I have read and heard losts of different things about how to stop this. The breeder recommends a rolled up newspaper and just a tap on the bottom, other people said a tap on the nose but i will never hit my dog ever so have gone down the route of firm telling off, growling, yelping in high pitch voice.... all to no avail, she doesnt want to let go and sometimes have to prise her mouth off certain parts of my body. when she starts on the ankles there is no way of stopping her she will just chase me or anyone else she feels like gnawing on!! Is is possible for an 8 week old to have attitude and sulk, she has come into the lounge after being told off and thrown herself down on her bed like a spoiled teenager hahahah I want to know the best way to curb this behaviour in a dignified manner, I keep reading that these beloved dogs live to please their owners.... when does this start happening because right now Jess only wants to please herself haaha I love her dearly and she makes me laugh so much, I have got her booked into puppy socialisation classes but not for a few weeks yet and need to know how to stop this biting, all advice very welcome guys!"

Thanks

I was just interested to hear what others think about this statement. What about correction of unwanted behaviour? Do you correct and if so how do you correct? I know what my views are but I would be very interested to hear others.

Hi Guys

After a somewhat disaster of a holiday I have completed some more training sessions with Diesel and have upted the anti a bit. Deliberately went to a place where we know more dogs are going to be.:ooh:

It would seem that if all dogs that Diesel meet are relaxed and not a bit mad or excited the walk is great and he mingles and socialises very well.

If on the other had any of the other dogs go into chasing or have a funny five mins darting around and barking it seems to set him off - his tail goes up straight away and he is in there trying to get them to calm back down by putting his head over them and nipping in the air next to them.:(

Anyone else have experience of this??

Anyway - we (the behavourist, Diesel and I )are going to an agility show tomorrow - not to enter or anything but just to walk around with all the chaos going on to see what he does and how to correct etc - I will let you know what happens and see if I can get some pics.

We are slowly getting to know Eva as you all know. She is getting the hang of the lead a bit better now but she goes bananas barking if she sees another dog. Joker is just calm and has never done this. Should I still take them out together so he calms her or will he pick up her nerves and get barky himself?

Thanks for all help so far it's a really nice feeling when I see them curled up together

I hear the phrase 'distract them with a treat or a toy' - when Eva and joker are chasing one another around the field I couldn't distract them with anything other than a double decker bus!!? When they are calm and a bit tired they listen perfectly - but what do I do when they take off after each other or a rabbit? Cuz they don't even respond to me at all under those circs - treat or toy become uninteresting to them??

Merlin and Sally both walk fine separately, but together they are nightmares. The tug, pull (like tanks!) and try and play with each other as we walk down the street. They try and run and refuse to listen to commands.

What is the best way to deal with this?

They have three 40 minute walks a day. At the moment they have their two evening walks lead together.
