there were 4 types of GSD at crufts all different, 1) work line ie Tyguard, 2) European Show lines, 3) English Show lines, 4) some that did not fit in any of these that had no bone, certainly didnt fit the standard according to the others, they had reverse masks etc and if you saw them in the street you wouldnt give them a second glance.
When I get time I will route out some very old size/weights from the 1920's.
There as always been a problem with size and different types which is what you will get mixing several regional herding breeds together, all the types were completely different in size, coat type, colour, even ear carriage.
