Years ago, when I was pregnant with my first, we had a run in with a local family (the Bullocks - apt name!) who had a pit bull. They were legal then.
I was walking my boy Bandit (3 year old staff, VERY fit & strong, but VERY obedient) in the fields & this Bullock guy turns his pit bull loose and shouts "Get it!".
Cut a long story short there was a fight. My boy pinned the pit to the floor by the neck and hung on, shaking it hard. I tried to grab his collar, missed and grabbed his back. In an instant he had turned, latched on to my hand & virtually gone through to the bone. It lasted an instant - as long as it took to realise that it was me. He let go & cowered, flat on the ground because he had bitten me & the other dog ran off with Bullock in pursuit.
My point is that yes, a bull breed will use every ounce of muscle to hold his bite, but that doesn't mean he won't let go if he thinks he's in danger elsewhere! You may not be able to get through to him, but he will still be very aware of his own mortality & will defend himself no matter what.
