Staff running loose fighting with the dog
Can't believe some people, had to write it on here.
My mates got a staff and as he does alot of running for boxing he stopped by at mine tonight to let his staff might our pup lexi. They were fine, i was probably more worried than lexi to be honest. Anyway we let them say hello talked for 10 minutes then he got on his way.
Literally 2 minutes after shutting the front door my phone went and it was my mate saying mike can you give us a hand and i just heard loads of barking etc so knew something was happening, ran to the end of my street and my mate was holding his staff on the lead in one arm, and this other staff on a lead on the other so i grabbed it. We were like how the hell is this staff running about loose next to a main road with a lead on? We found out where it lived off a neighbour but nobody was at home. 10 mins later a car pulled up it was them, the guy had tied the dog up outside and gone out. Can you believe it. And it had gotten loose. It was actually his mrs who came home and told us this, she just said oh yeah its my boyfriend he mustve tied him up and hes gotten off sorry.
Makes me mad i tell you, its actually quite lucky in a way that the dog did have a lead on for something my mate could hold and keep them seperated whilst fighting till i got there. Otherwise i dont know what he would've done nothing more scary than 2 big bulky staffs fighting.
Every time i go out now i wont be walking past that house, we have done 3 times a day and im selfishly glad it wasn't lexi walking past when the dog got out because my mates could defend itself where she wouldn't have been able to.
Arggh.

It makes me wonder tracey, and i do sometimes have a wild imagination lol. But, lets say we're walking our dog, and a big rotty starts running over off the lead no owner in site. Ill stand up tall and shout wafting my hands to get this rottie to back off, but if it doesn't and starts physically fighting with our dog, what is the best thing to do. I know they say dont put your hand inbetween two dogs fighting but when its your own i think natural instinct is to grab one of them and try to seperate them. But if this dog is attacking our dog and turns on ourself when trying to seperate them, is there a point where we let go of the lead and let our dog defend itself

I can only advise you about bull breeds mate, I've only ever owned GSDs + SBTs. If a rottie came bounding over, in all honesty I'd let my 2 go. Then I'd see what was what, then decide what I was going to do.
Bull breeds don't fight like other dogs, other dogs inc GSDs there will be a lot of snarling/snapping etc + basically handbags at dawn
Bull breeds get a serious grip + will NOT let go, they are the ones you need to keep an eye out for.
If my dogs were on leads + a massive dog came running over + had a go, I would not hesitate to let them off to defend themselves because if they are on a lead they are immediately at a big disadvantage
If poss, always carry a camera phone, as you may need to provide evidence that your dog/s were on leads + didn't start anything
I hope you are never in that position x

I always used a heavy metal choke chain with my dogs - carried attached to a long lead slung around my shoulders, it gives you a lot more length to your arm, plus if a police person stops you, you just say its to catch any stray dogs you come across!!
Seriously the best way to separate two fighting dogs is to have two people and each grab a tail (difficult with dogs that don't have tails ). It is very difficult, if not impossible when you are on your own. Most times when a dog has attacked mine I have managed to separate or stop them before my dog flipped and retaliated. If you have two dogs in a full on fight try and throw something (like a coat) over their heads - if they cannot see their opponent it gives you a few seconds to separate them. NEVER try and grab the collar/neck - I got badly bitten when I tried to separate my two girls that way. I grabbed ones collar just as the other tried to bite her there and she got my arm instead.
Whatever happens you have to make sure that after the dogs are separated that they stay separated, as if one is released they will almost certainly attack again.

No messing about there Pam
I also love staffs too tracey but like you say stray ones really can be scary. I think the fact ive seen my mate lift his right up off the floor while the dogs holding onto his tug rope and you just realise how powerful them jaws are.
What are your two like with other dogs? I'd love lexi to become friends with my mates staff, but im going to always be worried incase he bites her and wont let go. Hopefully touch wood it will never happen, and my mate says we will just make sure his dog doesn't have a ball or anything because he might get possessive about it.
You know a lad told me once (some one different this, a while back) that his staff had hold of a dog and to make it let go he had to stick his finger up its bum

Glad all the dogs are ok. I was told if dogs are fighting, never go between them.I think that is what we all naturally do.I was told to pull the dogs tail, then it will release it's hold to turn to see what is going on.Where as if you put your hand near the mouth, it will carry on the attack where you could possibly get hurt.
