I adapt my training to the personality of my dog. I used some "alpha" training techniques with Arch such as not letting him walk through the door before me (none of this pinning him to the floor stuff) and it worked wonders. He still has lots of personality but is now a well behaved senior gentleman and people ask me all the time how I trained him. He's happy, well balanced and sleeps in our bedroom.
I didn't use the same technique with Ella-Bella - she's a completely different dog and was so easy to train because she copied Arch and just wants to please.
Harry just took patience, love and building of trust.
Poppy responds well to reward based training with toys rather than treats. She loves toys and we're channelling all her energy into agility. We're lucky enough to have agility equipment in our park. I've read up about her breed and traits and she is a very active girl!!
However when I watch them there is a dominance and submissive behaviour amongst the three of them.
Do i think Cesar Milan is responsible for thousands of dogs being re-homed - I think there are far more factors such as puppy farms, no compulsory de-sexing of dogs, no regulation in terms of breeding and people getting a dog for the wrong reasons, people losing their homes, relationship breakdowns and getting the wrong breed. I am becoming more and more aware of this as I get more active within the rescue community. Never once over here have I heard that Cesar Milan is to blame for the poor dogs who through no fault of their own are put to sleep in pounds throughout Australia.
Do I think all his techniques are right? No I don't - but I sometimes disagree with some of the things written in the forum on other topics - but I respect people's opinion and know that people on here visit this forum because they love their pets and only want what is best for them.
I have been an animal rights activist for decades, am vegetarian and make PETA look liberal - however I don't often express my views as I know they are not the norm and that what I find cruel the majority of people don't.
One thing we're all agreeing on is the kicking of dogs is not acceptable - however we all know that things can be edited or left out to slant things a certain way.
One thing he does advocate and I truly believe is that we should never put a healthy dog down. Humans are responsible for the behaviour usually down to poor treatment or lack of understanding. We have a moral obligation to rehabilitate that animal.
Before anyone jumps down my throat I think it's wonderful to see so many people advocating the rights of the animal. I wish there were more like us all and then animal cruelty and neglect would come to an end.
