Volunteering!

Hi!

I wasn't sure where to put this so I chose the general forum.

I'm going to start volunteering! I've chose Dogs trust as it's fully about dogs and they have a great system. It'll involve cleaning, walking, doing my part to rehabilitate and socialize them.

I figured it'd be the perfect experience for myself before owning a dog and it'd be a great way to put something back into the dogs life considering some (maybe most) have had a pretty bad past to end up there.

Never really thought of doing unpaid work until I put my mind to it and thought of volunteering for a dog shelter. Looking forward to it!

I think it is great what you are doing, if i had the time i wouldnt mind doing it either, but this 21st century life is keeping me on my toes enough. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Well Done

I think it is the best way to gain experience with dogs....

One thing to think about though... the big rescues have a huge list of people wanting to volunteer at their rescue.... It might be quicker researching other rescues in your area....

After I finished school I put my name down to volunteer at my local SSPCA.... 2 YEARS later my name was at the top of the list. At the time I was doing 2 weeks work experience there as I needed it to get into the animal care college I applied for. Because I didn't reply straight away about continuing doing the volunteering... they took me off the list...
When I did my work experience, all I did was bleach kennels for one week....

The people who worked there weren't very nice.... I would class them as female dogs with one another....

BTW where abouts in the UK are you?

Yeah. I'm hoping I gain valuable experience with it.

We don't really have many shelters here as I'm in Leeds (or atleast I don't think we do). I mean, I wouldn't mind the RSPCA but my main reason for volunteering would be dogs as I'm just a dog person.

Thanks. The only problem there is that looks more like a dogs re-homing forum. I'm looking for a shelter to volunteer at.

Was it fun?

Be careful about the RSPCA as they do put dogs to sleep (in a lot of their kennels the actual workers do it - not a vet). If you get involved with a dog then they put it to sleep it could be quite traumatic for you.

At least the Dogs Trust don't put healthy dogs down.

What about boarding kennels? But if you do try boarding kennels ask to get paid for your time!!!

Sue

Check the rescues in your area....
Dog Rescue Pages - North-East England centres

Snd yes I enjoyed it... The groomer tought me how to groom and clip various breeds of dog with different temperaments.

Great idea, as a rescue vollenteer I thank you,... but I must admit I would never, ever want to work with the RSPCA in any capacity, I dont like them or their ways.

Personaly I would try hard for a rescue center, these centers usually need every bit of help they can get, from feeding, or walking, to cleaning or advertising.

....but there is also a down side,..if you go for a rescue then you are going to see some horrible sights, you may see cruelty on a big scale,.. just be prepared for it if it comes your way

I hope you find your job,... we need you
