Today at Training):

Kaiser goes training every Friday at 1.30pm for an hour.
His trainer is called Karen.
Troy goes training on Fridays also(same club just at 5pm with a different trainer Kirsty).
Well recently Kirsty has been coming to Karens class and advising me on what to do with Kaiser
I told her the chip he had (suprelorin) hasnt worked and if anything made him worsethis was her suggestion.
She then told me to have him castrated as he's aggressive with dogs and tells me to alpha roll himShe told me to castrate Troy which I did reluctantly when he was 12 months old but it made him worse(he is very nervous around people now)The vet said Troy has pyschological issues.
Well Kaiser is not aggressive he is dominant with dogs smaller than him which are male and entire.
He also licked the floor as many dogs do(there is a plastic sheeting covering the floor we train on which is at village hall)lots of dogs lick the floor where a treat has mabye dropped but she told me to tell him off when he licked the floor I said why? She said cos he's bitching.
Basically im getting P****d off with her interferring and unsure who to talk to first Kaiser's trainer Karen or Kirsty.
Ive been thinking of leaving the club especially for Troy as he finds it very stressful.
I always have control of Kaiser when in class and he doesnt get a chance to have a go at any dogs.

Linda

Poor you..

I would personally speak with Karen Kaisers actual trainer as it's likely she isn't going to be happy with another trainer giving conflicting advise in her training class.. so will sort it out with Kirsty.

Are you happy with how training with Karen is going or is your feelings about advise being given an overall feeling concerning the advise being given?

Neutering might help to take some of the hormonal side of things out of the equation making tackling retraining of his behaviour towards other entire dogs easier, but can't honestly see it being a quick fix, more so if the chip didn't help..

Thank you for your reply.
I will speak to Karen first and No I dont think she is happy that Kirsty intervenes, but doesnt say anything, maybe she cant see an issue if she did surely she would say
Yes Im happy with Karen and Kaiser does seem to enjoy it too.
Today it was an off lead Agility session and he loved it and there were no issues, it only happens when another dog comes in his space.
Thing is I am scared of neutering after what happened to TroyAnd never want to go through that again plus the fact I show him and any prizes go to My Local Dog Rescue.
I have thought about seeing a behaviourist and Kirsty laughed at me!When Kaiser is dominant and has a go he will only do this if the other dog isnt confident and will mouth try to pin the dog down and make a lot of noise, he never hurts the dog.

Just to say I give him a stern warning and now is on a long lead so I have some control

I think i would try to get both dogs in with Karen as she sounds the better of the 2 trainers or change and go to somewhere completely new and see what they say on meeting the 2 dogs without you verbally telling them too much about what has been said so far, at least then you kind of get a neutral honest opinion from a new face maybe?

You can still show a neutered dog hun so you would still be able to show Kaiser even if you had him castrated. (i have a friend who used to show her neutered Maremma and he made it to crufts with no 'bits'!! )

Why has she started coming into Karen's class? Did you or Karen ask her to?

To be honest she sounds like a very old fashioned trainer (especially if she is telling you to Alpha Roll dogs) and she seems to have caused many of your problems with Troy.

If the implant did not work I definitely would not castrate Kaiser, it could well cause you even more problems (as you have already found out with Troy).

If I were you I would seriously consider leaving the class altogether, Troy is already finding it stressful so it is doing him more harm than good and you really don't need added problems with Kaiser - which you would get if you go down the road of Alpha Rolling him. GSD's are extremely intelligent dogs and if he truly was aggressive with other dogs Alpha Rolling him would only make him worse, plus he is likely to turn on the person who is trying to treat him like that. I know what my boy would have done if she had tried to Alpha Roll him - and it is not pleasant . Put it this way, it would be the last dog she ever tried to pin.

Activities with our dogs should be fun for everyone - including the dogs! Yes you have to have certain rules and some discipline, BUT you have to have some fun as well. All my dogs loved the training classes, and they absolutely adored the trainer - my last boy used to go crazy with delight when I took him in the hall. When they start finding it stressful that is the time to stop.

Is there no other clubs you could join?

Sue

As everyone knows Dalton can be.............a challenge, But not only did he take the stitches out after being castrated, plus, Dalton i think is just as narly if not more so after castration, Having no "Love spuds" has made no difference to how tolerant or not he is in any way im afraid, He is still a Demon lol xxx

I am shocked that Karen has allowed Kirsty to interfere to be honest Linda, I think you should definitely get Troy out of that class, she's a danger imo and isn't helping you or Troy and her reactions to Kaiser are shocking!!

If you're happy with Karen then I think stick with it but if you're not then maybe as Matrix/Logan start a new class for both boys and see how they get on.

I agree with Sue training should be fun for both of you not stressful....xxx

I cant get them both in with Karen as she only does the one class at healing
They both go to 2 other clubs aswell
Tuesday night alternate weeks, training is at a horse menarge(probably spelt wrong)The traininer their Carol doesnt think I have an issue with Kaiser as like I said its only when dogs come into his space, she said he is just teaching them some manners and telling them off.
The other club we go to is outside on the field so one dog stays in the car and then I swap over.
The trainer there cant really see a problem either and said its just natural dog behaviour.
There arent any other clubs around believe me ive looked
They have both been going to training clubs since they were 8 weeks.
The training continues at all times.
I cant let him have a free run as it horrifies other people if Kaiser has a go

Hi Sue
She came in the class to make the numbers up apparently
Plus she starts her own classes straight after Karens.
This is why I dont want to have him castrated its caused more issues with Troy (he used to be such a confident happy dog with people now he's a nervous wreck!)
My vet also said Castration could make him worse as in aggressive)
I have said she could try and alpha roll him if she so wished she said nothing!
I would never attempt to alpha roll him.
I agree time to stop with Troy(tonight will be his last but I will continue with the other 2 as he seems to enjoy them just not being around people)

Thanks
Linda x
