Does he know a command like 'off'? I would start calling him to you when you see him jumping up and then attach the command to it so you can ask him to get off.

A trick that I have found to work very well with counter-surfing dogs is to put some coins in a small tin (golden syrup/treacle tins are ideal), leave something tempting within reach and hide out of sight of dog with tin in hand, but where you can see what is happening. When dog jumps up to investigate throw the tin to land on the floor just behind dog - works particularly well on a hard floor. The noise of the coins in the tin will take dog by surprise and it will not be associated with you - the dog should think it is the result of jumping up and if you can repeat it a few times the message should get through. You should also teach him the command "off" for getting off furniture etc.

My mum had a counter surfing boxer! She thought she would teach him a lesson on day and left a piece of ham on the side, but put english mustard on it! Stupid dog ate the ham and cleaned the mustard off the plate! When my mum went back into the room, he had got the jar of mustard on the floor and was licking that out too!! Needless to say he was rather thirsty after that, but he never learnt!

Sounds like a good idea.
