My last place had cream-ish carpets & I bought rugs to go down on places where there was likely to be soiling from the dog. Then every so often, I'd use a carpet cleaner to bring it back up to a decent colour!

Well, even a landlord has to accept "Fair wear & tear". As long as there aren't any really bad stains on them, you should be ok. No carpet can stay pristine clean over the years no matter how many times you clean them!

I have carpets throughout whose original colour was cream! Despite shoes off at the door, paws wiped at the door, rugs, vax carpet cleaner to hand and vacuuming on a daily basis there's still a notable difference between the rugged and non rugged areas!
As soon as I'm able to I'll be changing the carpets throughout!

I've got a Bissell powerwash or something like that - it's brilliant, I got a reconditioned one from Bissell but you get offers all over now.
I would think about covering any heavy tread/pawed areas esp hallways.

What about that plastic cover stuff you can buy from carpetright? Like a plastic runner, I've had those before + they're quite strong
