6 months check up..

tomorrow sam has his six month check up.. this is free for all pups that age at my vets. its a new vet for me and havent had much dealing with them except his vacs and worming etc... i know they are going to talk about neutering him and will say he should be done now.. im unsure as to when to have him done and what is best for him.. i would wait for another year or so but i worry about olives next season due in about 5 months.. 2 entire dogs might prove a problem... that would make him about 10 months. hope they dont bully me tomorrow....advise please guys

Tough one - there has been a lot of posts on this of late and quite frankly it is down to personal opinion (and you're right, how much your vet bullies you!)

I personally would not do it until he was more mature -but I know there are people that have done it relatively young, and had no problems.

All I can say is take on board what he says, question everything you can, then have a long hard think!! You wont be committing to anything straight away, so you have time to consider your options!

Good luck

Sue

How old is Olive? I'm always more inclined to spay the bitch, but then it would depend on the ages of the dogs really...
I always think it's best to neuter dogs once fully grown, and to give a bitch time to mature naturally also. But I would definitely spay a bitch when she gets to 2-3 years old because of pyo.
Dino won't be getting neutered until he's at least 2, and even then I probably won't unless I need to for some reason. My vet knows this I'm sure.

Don't be pushed into anything, the only reasons vets push neutering at 6months is because of eejits that breed, and for making money.

What breed? How many seasons has she had? Is there any possibility of just keeping them in separate rooms for that month and using crates? If it was me and it wasn't possible to keep them apart, I'd have the girl done x

seasons are a pain, as she gets older they be messier and it is a real stress for that few weeks. olive has a small belly button hernia. vet said it was tiny and not urgent but would like to have it removed at some point so if i had her spayed i would get this done at the same time..

Unless you plan to breed from the bitch I would definitely have her spayed now - it will prevent problems in the future and believe me Sam will be very interested if she comes in season when he is ten months old. If she is done then you can have Sam done later when he is fully mature.

thats the point.. i dont know! joe is going to be neutered within the next few weeks. he is nearly 2..when olive is in season he turns into skin and bone with his fretting and i think this will calm him down and hopefully put a bit of weight on him.. dennis was done about the same age..

Very good, I hope all visits other go as well,..are you able to take Sam there for social visits?, I have a new vets here now, but I certainly used to take the dogs to the other vets, we would try and find a slot when they are quieter, and unless there is an emergency, they were quiet willing to give the dogs a pet and a treat so that they never mind returning
