Its my angels 1st heat
Princess Tara came in to heat yesterday, she is 15 months old now, I was getting worried she never would .
Anyway please excuse my ignorance and try not to make me feel bad ( read some replies on other sites along the lines of "you should know better" and "you don't deserve a gsd if you don't know" bla bla,) but she is my first ever bitch, all my others were rescue males.
She is the light of my life and I am nothing without her so I want her to be ok.
Vet and breeder recommended me not to spay her until after her first season, so what I am asking is, how can I best care for my princess at this time and what happens during the cycle, I know nothing about menstrual stuff whatsoever.
I have a secure yard and Tara is indoors at this time with me.
I appreciate your experience and advice thanks.
Chris

Tilly was my first bitch so I know how you feel
Season will last for about 3 weeks ish, she may start to bleed, it can be a bit messy so cover your furniture if she's allowed on there, she may feel a bit sorry for herself, her ickle girlie bits will probably be swollen
The danger period is the last third of the season when she's fertile, keep her under lock + key, as much as dogs will want to get at her she'll become a little tart + be desperate to get at them
We took Tilly for lead walks only, didn't let her off her lead, + she was fine
Hope you get on ok, it's scary when you don't know, if you're at all worried ask, no one will shout at you, I won't let them

You won't get any of that here! After all, we all have to start somewhere!
Her vulva will swell, and she'll lose a little blood, which will then turn to a sort of straw coloured discharge. She'll probably keep herself clean, but if you notice any soiling around her back end just give her a wipe with warm water.
As Tracey says make sure you don't let her off lead at any time, but especially during the last 1/3 of the season - all the dogs will want her, and she'll want them!
You can buy hygiene pants from pet stores that will protect your furniture, but if you get some, make sure you get the right size & check continually to make sure they're not rubbing her anywhere.
She'll likely become a little strange & may be a bit tetchy, or over clingy! Don't worry, it's normal!
Good luck!

No, I probably wouldn't, either. Bitches have been known to scale amazing heights to get to a dog, and dogs will do the same!

wine and chocolate?????
Rugs has had her second season now, we just walk early in the morning and really late at night to stop much contact with other dogs. She mopes... which i can relate to but other than that she's perfectly fine.
I'm not sure i'd leave her in the yard, either. She WILL try to get out, and you could end up with a gang of wandering males hanging around and i'd be surprised if one of them doesn't figure out how to breach the fence.
All 'men think with their bits' thoughts aside, its a very powerful instinct and dogs can be really persistant!
Oh, and the smell can be REALLY pungent so i'd keep some fabreeze handy!
