Unspayed bitches and Mother instinct?

Hi all !
The other day during a training session the trainer asked me how is Maya with puppies, I reply that I prefer not to let her play with small puppies because she gets over exited and she may be a bit to rough..so she said that is strange because usually unspayed bitches should have a "mother instinct" but after that she said that it may be because she is still young herself...anyway just wandering what are your thoughts on this and if any of you have had a bitch with or without this "mothering instinct"?

Well I am no expert but if a woman is sterilised is her mothering instinct altered?

I think the instinct is there regardless in dogs also, they either have it or they don’t

Yes that is a point..but could be possible for a bitch to be really good with her own pups but not with others?

kita is just really nicekita is just really nice
I had a spayed GSD (spayed before her first season) who would mother anything, she adored pups.

At the same time I had a BSD who was entire. I never bred from her - BUT I always said that if I had then my GSD would have to take the pups and rear them because Lucy (the BSD) did not have a maternal bone in her body!!!

I don't think spaying has anything to do with it.

I agree Ella-Bella has never had puppies but they sometimes ask me to take her up to puppy pre-school because she's so gentle and it gets the puppies used to a big dog.

On the other hand Addison was used as a breeding machine and I wouldn't trust her around pups as much as I would Ella-Bella.

nisbreagha has a spectacular aura about
What a strange comment! Just like us all dogs are not the same and some may or may not have a strong urge to mother puppies, however even if they are not fab with young dogs it's not to say they have no mothering instincts it may be just that they can't be bothered with excited little puppies with sharp teeth jumping all over them! And spaying has not much to do with it!

Agree,I think Maya is like that so that's why I don't let her play with small puppies.
