dennis badger attack.

good recall and having your dog in sight on walks is so important. what happened to dennis one of the reasons i hate david letting joe run off when we walk making sam do the same.
my dennis was 7 and staying with mum while we were looking for a house in cornwall. her and her neighbour samuel would take the dogs ,wolfhound moisha 2, lady the little black staff 5 and jack the gsd cross 3 to the fields above the railway line every night.
it was dark and mum and her friend were walking the dogs and they had run in front out of sight. mum called them back and jack came but not the others... they looked for the other dogs for over an hour before moisha and dennis appeared, no sign of lady. mum cuddled dennis and he felt all sticky. she went back to the car and in the light saw dennis was covered in blood and was bleeding badly.. she rushed him to him to emergency vets while samuel stayed to look for lady..
he was cut badly and lost a lot of blood. his head injury exposed his skull and he had a cut accross his neck scruff and while under anaesthetic vet said he could put his whole hand up it like a glove. the same with a cut on his lower back. over 100 stiches inside and out..vet said it looked like badger injuries and he was lucky to have survived.

he was left at the vets and mum took other 2 home and waited for her friend who was searching for lady.. he came back at 4 am.. had found lady, a fox and a badger on the railway track.. all had died...it seems lady who was a chaser had seen a fox and run after it, dennis followed, they chased a fox on to the train track where there was a badger and a fight happened between the dogs and the badger.. during the fight a train had come and lady was killed along with the fox and the badger.. dennis escaped...after that he hated cars busses and trains and i could tell it had affected him.... i think the memories stayed with him for the next 6 years till he died....

his back was all bandaged up like a mummy but a pic here shows how brave he was...

i know. you dont realize how big they are till you see an adult one... dennis was in the vets for 3 days.... he had never in all the hundreds of walks over the years run off or not come when called and would never attack anything. he wouldnt have started it. i think lady did and dennis got caught up in it, mayby trying to protect her..

That's so sad, I did hear of a recent badger attack near me so like you I keep my girls close when I walk them near possible badger sets. Luckily for me I work with countryside rangers and have had a bit of badger training so I know where ti find sets and what they look like.

They are Lynn, I have to say it's irresponsible to let a stafford just run off + do its own thing though *runs for the bunker*
