Dog assessment

I had to do an assessment for the rescue today,.. a one year old male.

This is `Shiel`, named after Loch Shiel, this was taken after the assessment

I was told that I wouldnt be able to walk him as he would pull me off my feet, this was one reason he was to be rehomed, because no-one could control him.

This was how Shiel was when I first met him

I spent about 40 minutes giving him a bit of training, and this is how he took to that,...

He was good with traffic,.. and noise [ sirens ]

And didnt want to stay and watch the sheep very long [ although they were not very close]

He doesnt get out much, except for a bit of off lead in a small padock,.. he hasnt really been associated with people or animals, although he does play with a Border Collie from time to time

He would take a treat off me, but wouldnt let me stroke him at all,.. the owner admitted to me that he has NEVER been brushed in his life,..probably why he wouldnt let my hand anywhere near him

I was prepared for an exciting time.... in the end I came away wishing I had more room, he will make someone a damn good dog, with a bit of care and training

What a lovely animal, just shows you what the right person can do though. Bet he relished having proper boundaries in place (and a proper walk).

If i win the lottery..........

He is a beauty, Stuart. What a shame the current owners haven't taken the time to give him a bit of training, socialisation and a good blooming groom

It looks as though he will definitely make a wonderful addition to any experienced and understanding home, which has a bit of time to look after him properly.

Will he be staying with the current owners until we find him a new home, or will he have to go into kennels?

I am not sure, with Christmas coming up and nothing moveing at the rescue much, I would guess he will stay where he is for a bit,.. but thats up to someone else,.. the owner did ask `when can he go` indicating that he wants rid,.. so it might be sooner.

It annoyed me a little, as I said one of the reasons why we have been asked to re-home him is because he is `uncontrolable`,..and `members of the family cant take him out`,... when I walked him back home [ he was that good, I didnt bother with the car ] I mentioned that I would help with training if they wanted to keep him,... you can guess the answer,... the guy has always been a Border Collie man,..I dont think he had a clue what a Shepherd was like, and so didnt know how to go about looking after him

Sounds like they just want rid, you would just be wasting your time (plus you would get attached!).

Better if the dog finds a home that is able to care for him and love him, rather than staying there and then ending up being rehomed a few months more down the line, when he is even wilder.

He is absolutely gorgeous, pity he is so far away from me, but then maybe it's a good thing ..............

I'm sure he will not be looking for long.

Sue

Shiel deserves much better owners than them eejits!

What a lovely looking, if a little scared, face he has. He'll make someone a cracking pet soon hopefully!

Hmmm, yes it sounds as though this family just want to get rid of this lovely boy asap

If a good foster home could be found, where his training and socialisation could be worked upon then I am sure he wouldn't be waiting long for a new home.

Do you know where they got him in the first place? Have they had him from 8 weeks?

LindaM will become famous soon enough
What a nice looking boy, he reminds me of Lukey around the eyes except there is so much apprehension in Shiel's eyes. At one I would have thought he is still a bit of a puppy. Sad to see what can happen in a year or less.

You look so confident with him. That's what he needs I'm sure. I hope he gets the 'right' home.
