To me they are the ultimate dog, they are used in so many different sections, police, guide dogs, agility, to name a few.
They ooze elegance, charm and beauty. I had dogs when I lived at home but we had a westie and a lab cross. Nothing against any breeds as I love all dogs but when I had my first shep I was like yourself in love for life. Eager to please, affectionate and loyal. I could go on for ages explaining why I love the breed, so why wouldn't you own a gsd!

My parents had GSDs before I was born, we had a couple of labs when I was growing up, I got my first GSD when I was about 17 (llloooonnnngggggggg time ago ) + we always had them. Then when I got married hubby wanted a SBT + we've had them for about 17 years now.
My sister has 2 GSDs, I love all dogs but SBTs and GSDs do it for me

I was always a Border Collie man, with the odd different breed thrown into the mix over the years [ an Elkhund, and Lab ].
before the Sheps arrived we had Buck the Border Collie and a young Bearded Collie pup,.. then Buck died of old age,..leaving `that` gap
Allison used to have an `alsation` many years ago, and always wanted another, so we started to look around, and came across the German Shepherd Rescue Scotland web site,.. we sort of feel for Kee,..and took her on
I then wanted to put something back into the rescue, so I became a volunteer.
We then took on Sam,.. and fostered Jazz,.. well you can guess how that turned out

I grew up with the breed from the age of 6yrs
first one of my own when I moved out of the house was a stray that turned up one night and threw the girls football through the open window he was in a bad state just skin and bone I gave him a meal he then guarded the street all night following day I took him to the vets for a check up then to local police station to register as found - needless to say no one turned up for him - they would have been prosecuted if they had he weighed 20kg at that time his pads were raw from walking

Always, always wanted one as I got to know the breed through working with animals all my life. However, I always found myself taking on desperate dogs that needed a home, regardless of their breed.
I finally got to choose my breed at the age of 50!
By far the best dog I have ever had in all ways and completely lives up to my high expectations.
Just need another one now!!!

I have loved the breed for as long as I can remember but wasn't in a position to have my own GSD until I was around 25 years old and bought my own house.
I think my love for the breed was certainly helped along by being an avid Joyce Stranger fan as a child/teenager (and adult!) - I read all her books, and especially loved the non-fiction books written about her own dogs. I also wanted to be a police dog handler from a young age and always admired the GSD police dogs I met.
Like you Sal, myself and my sister also walked every dog we were allowed to in the village where we grew up, and we had a longhaired GSD called Mandy to walk as well as a variety of other breeds. I will never forget a beautiful black/gold standard coated bitch called Sheba that we were desperate to walk, but unfortunately, even though she was a lovely friendly girl, the owners told us they were training her to be a guard dog, and so didn't want us to walk her
As soon as I could have a dog I took on a 16 month old GSD who was a rejected police dog and I haven't looked back since (although have had two border collies alongside my GSDs too). GSDs have always been, and will always be, my first love
