Daft Question....maybe!
I know winter is upon us but was wondering about Harvey being warm during the day
Do you leave the heating on, or put it on a timer to come on later?
His dog walker takes him out and about and lets him run about in the fields so if the weather is bad Harvey will be all wet and cold and we dont get home till 5.30pm
I am just a bit unsure on what to do!

Even if he is wet through on the outside the GSD coat is such that the undercoat stays dry and he should not get cold if he has a nice bed to snuggle into. I certainly would not be leaving heating on for him as long as it is not several degrees below freezing outside.

When I lived in the UK I had my thermostat set to 23C. No wonder my gsds acclimatised to well when we moved to Australia

I have 2 storage heaters on all through winter. One in the downstairs passage and one in the kitchen. These don't exactly warm the house, but they do take the chill off & make a comfortable environment for Dempsey during the day. But then Dempsey has a really short coat with no undercoat, so he feels the cold a little more than a GSD.

The last place we lived in had storage heaters and it was ideal
This new house we are in has central heating so was not too sure if Harvey would be chilly!....I know I am soft sod but you got to look after your dog

My heating is on constant but set to 18 degrees. Olli seems ok with this :-)

You could always turn down the thermostat a bit while you're out. That way he wouldn't be cold & you wouldn't be wasting too much heat. Or maybe you can turn off individual radiators so that the whole house isn't heated?

As long as your walker towels him off and its not below freezing I'm sure he'll be fine. IME if anything GSDs hate being too hot.

I'm smiling as I have just bought a cool bed for Lukey as I need the heating on and he is always hot.
He has a really thick coat and even more so since being castrated. I wouldn't worry about heating being on as long as he is towel dried, out of a draught and has the choice of a nice bed to snuggle into if he choses.
I think it is a reasonable question to ask as an unheated house can feel very cold to us.
I think I might be tempted to turn the thermostat down quite low to provide some background heating but more for me so the boiler doesn't have to work so hard to bring the house back up to temperature.

We always turn the heating down very low when we are not at home,.. why waste energy.
...... but anyway, a GSD should be good with no heat at all, they have a coat that is plenty warm enough for anything that this country can throw at them,..pampering too much always seems to bring with it its own set of problems
