Not so good so far

Well we started well with our foster dog, he has made himself very much at home and he and Ted had a nice play on the beach before we left the rescue. Max did put his head over Ted's back a couple of times and growl but we corrected that. However, once they had been home for about an hour they were out in the garden and they began a chase game, Ted being to chased.
Unfortunatley Max got a bit too excited and began to bark then bit Ted on his side. I know Ted is a whimp but he yelled more than I have ever heard him before.
Now Ted is terrified of him and won't go anywhere near him or get of the sofa.
I do not want to give up on this but I cannot have my dog terrified to walk accross the floor. I will have to crate Max tonight to get any rest.
Any suggestions what I can do?
I am so disappointed I am close to tears

OK - take a deep breath. This is early, early days. There is almost always an initial period where things don't go to plan when introducing a new dog, especially when there is already a dog in residence.

I would keep the boys separate by a baby-gate, or by popping Max in a crate for periods, for the next few days. Walk them together away from home, but don't allow Max to get over-excited. Perhaps have him on a long line so you can calm him down if he gets too boisterous.

As I say, this is very early days and it should get better over the next few days.

Obviously Ted's happiness is paramount, but I am sure that, given time, the boys will learn to get along.

Hugs for you though, as it isn't nice when you think your dog is unhappy or scared x

I would give Max a lot of exercise alone until he is tired and in a more relaxed state. Then walk them together on neutral ground and hopefully you can build from there, don’t get to disheartened its early days and they both need time to adjust, good luck with whatever way you deal with it

I am sorry this has happened you must be very upset. I know how much you want this to work and with help from the more experienced it stands a good chance I think.

They must both be bewildered. Ted with the stranger who has now bitten him for whatever reason and your foster who is entering such a different (if potentially wonderful) environment who must not know how to react to being in a family setting.

Hang on in

Hugs for Ted and hope the wound heals soon.

Linda

I think this is early days, and personaly I would have expected this to start off with.

No two dogs will be equal, there is always one that is slighty `stronger` than the other, it takes a little while for them to sort themselves out

When ever we have had another dog here there has always been that tussle,..it was the same with the dog that has just left us, it took a week before Sam instaled manors into Shiel, but by the time Shiel left us, all three dogs were playing well

It may be that Ted ends up slightly lower than the foster dog, if this is the case then the dogs will not give it another thought, its the natural way,..so as long as you are happy with that, then they will be

Lets us know how they get on as often as you can

Hi I agree with Stuart you might find the foster dog more dominent than ted but it will take time for ted to fall into place with that. With our two highway is the more dominent one and will mouth scout on the back to put him in is place after scout has jumped on him and nipped his ear.As long as its mouthing and not biteing it's what they do I have noticed.Try and distract him with his favorite thing when he starts like a tennis ball. best of luck and try to treat them equal and not favour ted as he is the first
