Differences within the breed.

Oh this being off sick is making me go crazy with questions and thoughts and i'm afraid this forum is going to bare the brunt of those!

I was looking at some piccies on the fave photo of your dog thread and couldn't help notice some substantial differences between the dog's.
Not just coat colours but lengths of coat and general structure.

So my question: Roughly how many different types of German Shepherd lie within the category of being classed as a GSD?

Do they even have different types or is it just that each dog takes on a different appearance!

wildmoor has disabled reputation
some even as 8 week pups you can tell what lines they are from, there are many types - some so far removed from what a GSD is they should be called something else - if you go back approx 130 years ago there were many types of shepherd dogs in Germany hence why a uniformed standard was developed
now even the bone structure on some are not that of the shepherd with the high ridge down the middle of the skull and narrow head shape these are more like C.lupus than C.fam

I can't remember who it was who sent me a link to a website showing all the different types of Shepherd from over the years but it was brilliant.

I was very happy to see how closely Kai and Antilly matched the 'original' type from the early 1900's

I think I have seen the same link as Vislor and will try to dig it out, as it makes very interesting viewing.

Just off the top of my head, in the UK we have :

West German show line
West German work line
DDR (East German) work line
English show line
English obedience line
Pet bred

And probably everything in between!

There do seem to be a lot of types but isn't that the same in a lot of pedigree breeds?

This would be really interesting to see the different types of dog within the breed. Sorry for the ignorance but I am not sure what lines mean - does it mean the dog's pedigree something like their family tree to put a human angle on it?
