I think I found out about this site here but it's been a while so I will post it again....

Rescue Helpers Unite -LINK

Basically, you sign up, stipulate how you are willing to help, give your postcode and how far you are willing to travel.

So far I've done a homecheck for an Akita rescue who wanted to know if two applicants were suitable to give a forever home one of their dogs in need. I also visited a lady who was giving up an Akita to assess the dogs behaviour, temperment etc so the rescue taking him on could decide where he would be best placed until his forever home came up, I am now waiting to hear about going to do another homecheck for a potential akita owner (seem to be a lot of akitas moving in and out in my local area)
By signing up and offering to do things like this you are saving time and money for the rescues and helping to ensure dogs in need are helped quickly and efficiently.
I would recommend it to anyone who is confident, knowledgeable and professional. Give it a go
