I just wanted to let all my forum friends know that we're adopting (hopefully) another doggie
I say hopefully cos I suppose it depends on everything going well with Kira, Benji and especially Loba who's doesn't like dogs giving her too much attention shall we say.
Anyway I'll tell you about him.
He's a gsd

and his name is Rex. He's about 5 (although from experience I think that's the age all rescues say their adult dogs are lol). He's not very well, but I don't know exactly in what state he's in. He was found wandering about the streets in a terrible state dragging his back legs. He was taken to a dog shelter where the vet said he'd probably need to be put down as he had dysplasia. Anyway after doing some tests they discovered he had leishmania. I don't know if any of you will have heard of this as it's not a disease that you have in the uk. It's very common in Mediterranean countries and is caused by a type of mosquito bite (actually I think it's a sand fly). There are loads of dogs in shelters with this, apparently it is treatable although not curable and as yet there isn't a vaccine for it. Rex needs one tablet a day, but that's about all I know. Oh and his legs are stronger and he doesn't fall over now.
Rex was in a shelter that puts dogs to sleep if they can't find a home and was due to be pts in December. Just before his date a girl adopted him but apparently her dogs didn't accept him and she returned him. The people at the shelter opened a bank account for Rex and thanks to donations have been able to pay for him to stay in kennels so he wasn't sent back to the shelter. They say he's good with children and dogs.
The girl i've been speaking to at the shelter has just phoned and says that she's trying to organise all the paperwork today so that Rex can be here tomorrow. He's in Abacete which is about 7-8 hours drive from here so they're sending him by courier, poor thing.
I've not got much more info on him, most of what I know is from the internet, we'll see how he is when he arrives. And we'll be straight round to the vet I imagine. I've not had a home check, they're not charging me anything for him (normally you have to pay round about 100-150euros to adopt a dog here) I think they're just really desperate to find him a home.
Here's a short article about leishmania, I suppose I'll be learning more about it in the next few weeks.
