Poly is a jewel in the rough
I used one when they were puppies but not sure the back seat would be totally feasible for a fully grown shep

We used one with Blitz when he was a pup as he was constantly trying to sit on my knee, he was so nervous too.
Now though we don't need one, he jumps in, sits on the back seat and stays there very nicely. If I was travelling long distance I would definitely use one though, it's alright wizzing him from A to B or having him keep me company while I drop Dan off but I would say it is a must for Motorway driving for both mine and his safety.

It's been a godsend actually. My car would be a right filthy state without it. Isla has a penchant for mud and water
I got mine quite cheaply from zooplus - it was about twenty quid, on special offer.

Bless! Isla used to do this when she was tiny too, in fact last week she managed to get onto my lap again before I had secured her in the back! She is a little too big now to be sitting on my lap but it was sweet of her to try!

I think a harness would be fine for your dog, especially if you get him used to it from an early age.
