I think it's right for a breeder to narrow down the pup's for a buyer, once they have the full information about the buyer and what they are looking fr from their dog.
No visitor could know the full character of a pup from a half hour visit, where as a careful breeder pays attention to the litter picks out the bold lively pup's and the quieter ones.
it's also about getting the closest match as you want your puppy owners to be happy long term, it's no good sending the lively pup to a home thats neber had a shepherd before no matter how many there parents had
We do this with all of ours.
The other breeders is probably just looking for sales if they keep pushing, something should catch your eye make you want to look further talk to them meet the adults, both where possible
good luck with your search

I agree to a point but, Banger has had GSDs before the last one an extremely difficult male not through lack of anything banger didnt do but due to the specific bloodlines and he didnt give up on the dog like many do

Also I personaly would object someone choosing for me - Stefano tried that and failed he wanted me to have a female not what i wanted ( certainy not into having a bitch on breeding terms) I viewed at 3 weeks, I then went back at 5 1/2 weeks to assess and narrowed it down to 2 pups both male shortcoat there were 2 other males but they werent what I was looking for 1 was LC, the other not bold enough or enough prey drive for me
as I was having first pick I went back at 8 weeks to make my final descision

Dont get me wrong I appreciate breeders advice as they have seen the pups develop but one breeder was trying to sell me a pup that may have had a health problem, was underweight but catching up nicely and that made me think twice.

Our previous dog was handy with his toofers even with us when trying to do normal stuff like dry paws or clip claws. He went to puppy classes at a young age and was taught to lie down for an exam. But after about 1 year old he seemed to change and all 3 of us has had a bite off him usually for no reason at all, but the next minute he would cuddle up to you to say sorry.

I plan to socialise a new pup from first vacc. as our new vet does this with other 1st vacc. pups, and really socialise the heck out of him. We did this with our previous dog but maybe not early enough, those first few weeks are critical.

We kept Max going as long as we could despite EPI and eventually CDRM but it was a constant vigil out on walks because he would go for anything that crossed his path and a lot of trainers wanted to charge lots of money for 1 to 1 sessions, when what he really needed was to work with other dogs.

Now that I have also found the Dog House at Seaham they seem to know GSDs and have a good range of classes and social walks all week. When we had Max no one really wanted to know because as soon as you looked at him he would "go off". We loved him though.

know what you mean re Stefano,
the point is about everyone being happy long term, breeder included, you should never walk away from anywhere unsure about your purchase least of all with a dog...
Banger, it does sound like you had some of the sales pater, and no one should be trying to ram their pup's down your throat far from it in fact. with the experience and comitment you've talked about, you should be a good home for a puppy of any level re drives dominance, but it's still a tough choice and this is where the breeder if things have been done well should be helping

TBH when we went to get Lexi her breeder told us we couldnt really pick one, as they were all the same etc etc but I wanted Lexi there and then she picked us wouldnt leave us alone so I knew she was the one and luckily she kept her for us

She told us that she was a better judge of which dog would suit which owner and I suppose its right in a way as she had had them for 7 weeks and knew there characters.

Maybe she knew no one would want lexi lol and made it seem like she was in high demand as she wasnt certain we would get her but we did made it seem even better lol

Wouldnt change her for the world little madam
