Hill Rescue Dog
This afternoon Yogi pulled me out of a sticky, freezing cold peat bog
I was taking all the dogs for a walk on the hill behind my house and was on a track I regularly go on. There is one part that is a bit mossy and boggy but I usually just skirt around that bit and carry on. For some reason today I wasn't really concentrating, plus it is quite icy and snowy up there and so the bit that is boggy was kind of hidden by snow and ice. I walked straight into it I went straight up to both my knees in sticky black peat and was stuck
Thankfully, without really consciously doing it, I have trained Yogi over the years to come back to me and allow me to grab his collar and use him to steady my balance or get up a steep bit of hill etc.
So, without getting too panicky (as I really couldn't move my frozen legs - and then I got cramp in one thigh!! ) I called Yogi back over and he came straight over to the edge of where I was stuck and I grabbed his collar and got him to pull me out. I lost a wellie initially, but managed to pull it out once I had the other leg out.
Phew! Thanks Yogi, my hero

Thanks both. A hot bath and a lovely hot chocolate sorted me out - and Yogi got extra raw chicken rations in his tea

Well done Yogi,...and very pleased you are ok.
Maybe its because we both walk simular terrian, that I have also done the same with mine, Kee to begin with, many people comment in my videos that Kee is always close,.. well thats part of the reason,...I am also trying it with Sam, as he is probably the strongest,.. he will come back ok, but as far as pulling is concerned I have more faith in Kee at the moment, she doesnt need to be called, if I fall she is there as soon as I hit the deck, and it would be the same with a bog.
Are you going to try with your other dogs? well worth the effort

In our sort of terrain Stuart, I think it is really important!
I am definitely going to train Zak to do it as well, as I think he will end up a bigger and stronger dog than Yogi when he is fully mature. I just know that, being a big pup, he would probably just leap all over me at the moment and either get himself stuck, or push me further into trouble
I have already started the conditioning though, by regularly calling him back on our walks and holding his collar for short periods, all the way around - and being relatively rough, without getting him high, as this could be the real-life scenario of today.
Have any of your dogs had to rescue you when out on the hill Stuart? Have you ever become disorientated in the mist or fog?

Gladly No,.. but I know they could easily walk me home,.. I have often said to them,..`ok lets go home`, turned and purposly just followed them,.. and of course as you would expect they know where to go,..so the same would happen in any weather
I have not had to get them to help get me out of trouble, but I have often used Kee while walking across a steep incline, having her above me, and me hanging on,... this was something I did when I was training her, it got her used to me hanging on,..... I use this method often, especialy when its wet

Clever Yogi
Last winter coming home from a 3hr walk in the snow and ice I fell, was second time in two days landing on the same elbow, I stayed put and had a wee cry, the dogs came running up and stood by my side until I got on my feet again. As soon as I was up, that gave them the green light to take off again and play.... aaaah what thoughtful dogs we all have.

Well done Yogi, what a clever fella!
You should put a cask of brandy around his neck like a St Bernard, just to celebrate afterwards
