Furminator all the way. We bought one from ebay (brand new) best price around. We got the latest version, large for long coats, think it was £25 from ebay, they're £40 in pets at home. Fantastic, and the dogs seem to like it. You wouldn't believe how much came off them the first time we used it! Use that then a softer hand brush to finish them off.

I have a furminator for my l/c but wouldn't use it in the winter. It gets rid of too much! Use a rake for every day use

We use a Furminator, but be careful not to over do it. We use it once a week, and then he gets the slicker.

I bought a furminator, used it once, and then sold it again. I felt it just cut the coat rather than groomed it.
I use a rake and then slicker on the body, and have a comb for the feathers behind the ears on the longcoats.

That is the best combination in my opinion, combs are really good for checking for any knots
