training class mayhem

well took bruja to training class the other day,and what a disaster.already told the trainer that she has a slight problem with other dogs ,which didnt seem to phaze her at all.but my god.it was a nightmare.and luckily there was only one other dog.she was the exeption of exceptions.complete and utter pain in the bottom.least i know now.its going to be a long trip of private tuition.

If its any consolation I have the honour of being asked to please NOT bring Sami back to the training class ever again.

LindaM will become famous soon enough
After 2 puppy socialisation classes and one training class I left. It was chaos, slippy floor, lots of barking dogs (mainly sheps except mine) noise so you couldn't think, everyone shouting commands at their dog and to top it all it was held 8 - 9 pm so I didn't give him his tea before we went. He was TOO TIRED at a young age to train at that time of night and then slept when we got back and too tired to eat his last meal. So I made 'an executive decison' and left.

People have mentioned dog clubs rather than classes on here so perhaps after a bit of one to one you might find a club to help you out. Good luck.

I'll try to be more helpful now. Have you spoken to the instructor since to talk about how you and they thought it went and now they have met your dog, what do they suggest to get more out of the next class?

Firstly .... i think any class who asks a dog to leave is not worth attending in the first instance... ( especially if your dog has not behaved in a manner that has been dangerous to other dogs or handlers)

a lot of class/club trainers are very judgemental and if a dog barks a lot it must be aggressive... but GSD's are renowned for being vocal especially in new situations.

when you say private lessons do you mean only you your dog and the trainer?? i would not pay the money for this as if you are not mixing with other dogs/people your dog will settle and you will not have the chance to correct the undesirable behaviour you went there to sort..

Sorry for the rant but i detest trainers/classes that take advantage of these situations!!!.. and they do.... i obviously dont know your actual situation but this just hits a raw nerve with me...

i am involved in a community dog management club (voluntary so we do it out of commitment to training not for profit) my advise is to call around some training in your area go along and observe see how the trainers are with all dogs, get a feel for it and then make a choice of where you want to go.

if i was giving you a one to one session i would have you in a class situation with volunteers i.e other trainers and their dogs in a controlled environment and we would work with you on your specific issue to prepare you to attend a general class..

P.S. so so sorry again for the rant and i wish you good luck please do not be disheartened you will get there..

To be fair Sami was one on her own!!!! But that said I agree with you. I tend to think Bruja would be better in the class with the others, it might take time but I think it would be worth it.

Olli was a mare when he first started classes. Within 4 visits it all fell into place - he loves it.

I only took her because Max was ill. She wouldnt shut up and was so excited. If all the other dogs had agreed to her running the class she would have been quite happy.
