You are entitled to your opinion, but are misguided on believing it affects the hips, those with the most severe HD comes from those that breed for the pet market, specific colours (blue, white etc) and the Obedience circuit.

Billy Sitch has a spectacular aura about
If I were to get another puppy, I would pay more emphasis on whether the breeder had had the relevent health tests done on their breeding animals with hips and elbow scores being the least they should have done. I would ask for photos of the Mother and Father and also copys of their pedigrees if they weren't on the breeders website or they may not have a website.

Next I would look at any health tests and results from previous generations as hip and elbow scoring has been available for years. I would then go and view the pups, if I felt that the breeder had taken every precaution to minimise the chance of the pup developing HD/ED.

I wouldn't be too fussy as to the dog developing a 'straight' or 'sloping' back as it's hips and elbows would be more of a priority. I would also speak to the breeder about various other topics such as epilepsy and EPI and maybe have to do some researching myself.

The dogs that I have at the moment have a slight 'slope' but then a lot of people would probably have guessed that already.

On Crufts on Saturday, there was a very brief interview talking about faults in dogs with an `expert`.

They showed a clip of a German Shepherd, and the interviewer was saying that she thought that the back doesnt look right to me, when are they going to bring that breed back to a strong looking dog, and whos responsible for it

The `expert` said that, it is the responsibiliy of everyone, the Kennel club, who are looking into what they can do about it, and the breeders who may well be asked to sign a contract, presumably to get the dogs back to a stronger form.

Now I have just watched this on tape, so I was able to re wind it to make sure I heard it properly,...and thats what was said

What I didn't get was, if the dog that won best of breed didn't "look right", why was it awarded best of breed? Surely if the Kennel club are taking part responsibility then they should get judges to award best of breed to the dogs who do "look right"! If that makes sense.

That particular dog that the supposedly (i will use the term loosely) experts criticized as BVA 3:3 A stamp (Germany) Hips 0 elbows he also has SchH3 and completed his 20KM endurance test (AD)
How many other BOB at Crufts have achieved anything like this let alone be capable of gating 12.5miles?

joyce will become famous soon enough
Stuart I would question the word expert, the dog in question has all relevant health tests highest working qualifications, which he had to pass a endurance test of 12.5 miles then do obedience after, I would like to bet he was a lot healthier than his competition in the main ring

Sorry Charlie, but your post went right over my head...

Joyce and Laura, they were not discussing the show results,...it was the future that the expert was taking about, there were two `experts` talking to the interviewer, and they were talking about the way things were likely to head in the future.

I have no opinion on this, because I dont know enough about it
