Any advice

I'm not sure if any of you have experience of this but I had to take one of my cats to the vets on Saturday as he was losing alot of weight, eating loads, drinking loads and peeing loads. Well as I suspected the vet has confirmed that he's diabetic.

Having done some research and talking to the vet it appears we can control this with blood monitoring and insulin injections twice a day so we are off to the vet again tonight for injection lessons and to find out exactly what we need to do.

It would be good if anyone has any experience of dealing with this in cats or dogs if you could tell me exactly what it involves - I'm not going to give up on him if he can still have a decent quality of life then I'll do all I have to do whether I like doing it or not.

I just don't want to feel I'm making him suffer just because I won't say goodbye!!

Thank you to anyone that can help.

Janet

Hi,

I've not had personal experience with diabetes either, but sorry to hear that your cat is going through this! I have a cat with kidney disease, so know how hard it can be with a new routine, but they are generally little fighters!

I think you'll receive all you need from your vet and find your own routine with it all.

Good luck

Jo

Sorry to hear about your cat,my mothers cat had diabetes and the vet nurses showed her how to give him his insulin jabs. It's not difficult as the injection is given under the skin rather than in a vein or into a muscle.Your vet will also give you a diet sheet. The trickiest bit is the urine testing cos its not easy chasing a cat round!Mothers cat lived for another 6yrs before she lost him and I think he was around 15yrs when he died. Hope I've been of help to you

Thank you for all your replies I know Harry isn't a GSD but you guys are always so helpful I knew you'd help even if was just to calm me down!! Even though I knew deep down what the result was going to be I still didn't like it.

Well we've been to the vet and been shown how to do his injection, it doesn't seem too bad and harry was as good as gold with us practising, apparently he's blood sugar was 23 something when its supposed to be between 5 and 10. He wants to get him settled on his insulin and get the dose right and then he is going to think about changing what we are feeding him as it may be possible to stop or reduce the insulin if we get the diet right. He said its too much to try and change it all straight away and could cause more stress for the cat and increase his blood sugar.

I feel much happier now and know that its the best option for Harry and once we get the dose right he'll be back to his old self.

Oh dear I'm sorry I seem to have waffled abit there.

Thank you all again.

Janet

Glad you got on ok at vets. Fingers crossed the diabetes will be under control fairly quickly.Mothers cat needed insulin most days as he used to sneak next door and be fed by a very nice old lady who could not understand that his diet had to be controlled Still he was a happy little cat and you would not have known he had a problem. Good luck for the future

We have Shadow who was diagnosed as Diabetic at the age of 12 now aged 16 she is now down to one unit a day. Our vet said it is not uncommon for cat's diabetes to change in severity. In the initial diagnosis shadow was on 4 units a day!

She's now better than she has ever been health wise but getting old and crabbit!

Just enjoy him as you'll only get more enjoyable time with him!
